Liverpool Transfer News: Spanish Duo Perfect Solution to Full-Back Conundrum
Liverpool have made moves for Spanish duo Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno, according to reports, and the two new signings would present the perfect solution to what was arguably the club's biggest need: The full-back position.
Former Atletico Madrid right-back Manquillo is already at the club, as shared by the Reds' official website. The 20-year-old completed a loan move, and he told Liverpool's Steve Hunter how he excited he was to be playing his football at Anfield when he was officially presented:
"I'm very happy to have signed for a club like Liverpool. I think it's one of the biggest in Europe. Any footballer would want to come and play here. When they tell you Liverpool want to sign you, I think like any player, you are going to be absolutely amazed and you don't think of anything else than going straight there. It's a team that nowadays, as I said before, any player would want to be a part of.

The Daily Mail's Simon Jones knows Liverpool aren't done addressing the position, however, and he claims the Reds are close to completing a £16 million transfer for Sevilla left-back Moreno.
The 22-year-old was one of La Liga's breakout performers last season and has been linked to Liverpool throughout the 2014 summer transfer window, and it now seems he could become the latest addition in what has already been a busy summer for the Reds.
Both players fit the profile of what Liverpool look for in the transfer market: They're young, they have a lot of potential, they could make an immediate impact and the club didn't pay a ridiculous amount of money to secure their services.

There's a key difference between the two, however, and it's what makes this double-swoop such a brilliant solution. Moreno will immediately fill arguably the club's biggest need, while Manquillo is a player for the future, who will now have all the time he needs to develop.
The implications of signing both players in the same window are huge. Liverpool will add an impact player in Moreno, meaning promising youngster Jon Flanagan could move to his preferred position on the right side of the pitch.
That relegates Glen Johnson to the bench (something fans will rejoice about), but the immediate addition of Manquillo means the Reds suddenly have both quality and depth. Johnson now becomes expendable, giving the Reds a big advantage when discussing the veteran's new contract.
How good can Flanagan become? The simple answer is nobody knows. One year ago fans and pundits assumed he was close to reaching his ceiling, and that he'd never progress beyond being a valuable asset off the bench and as a backup.
The youngster just keeps getting better, however, and at this point the starting position on the right wing is his to lose.

Manquillo's potential is more obvious, and if it weren't for a freak injury last season, he'd likely be further along his development already. In the best-case scenario, he'll be battling an equally young, potentially great right-back for a starting position, something that can only help the two.
And if Manquillo doesn't pan out, the Reds can just let the loan deal run out and send him back to Madrid. At the very least, the Spanish youth international will add a competitive aspect for the other players at the position, and the potential rewards are far greater.
Sure, there's a chance neither player is as good as advertised, or the both take more time adapting to the Premier League than originally anticipated. But for as little as £16 million, the Reds couldn't have gotten better value as they made their move to solve the full-back conundrum.
