The Heisman winner will likely be one of the four guys I have already profiled, but there has to be someone there just in case all four of those guys slip.

Among the top players in the best of the rest for the Heisman trophy are California RB Jahvid Best, Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead, Oklahoma State’s QB Zac Robinson, RB Kendall Hunter, and WR Dez Bryant.

Jahvid Best will be the best running back in the Pac 10 this season. Sure, USC has a stable of RB’s, but they will all split time leaving Best as the best in West. (Sorry for the Dr. Seuss style of that last sentence)

Jevan Snead might be on the cusp of greatness at Ole Miss. His success this season, however, rides on the backs of the O-Line. Snead should have plenty of opportunities if that line gels quickly. If not, Ole Miss and Snead will fall quickly.

Oklahoma State has some awesome talent at all the skill positions. QB Zac Robinson, RB Kendall Hunter, and WR Dez Bryant will put fear into Big 12 defenses all season long. The Heisman possibilities for this trio and the Big 12 will come down to the Texas game which the Cowboys will host on October 31.

The long shots

Virginia Tech QB, Tyrod Taylor could turn lots of heads this season if Tech plays as advertised. Their defense will put Taylor in favorable situations all season long.

Boise State QB, Kellen Moore is a tremendous talent. He threw for 3500 yards in his freshman season and led the Broncos to a 12-1 record. He has a better supporting cast this year.

Notre Dame QB, Jimmy Clausen might get some looks. The Irish play a powder puff schedule, he plays for the most recognizable program in America and that mature offensive line should give him time to put up gaudy numbers.

Tennessee S, Eric Berry has to have at least an honorable mention. After all, I did start the Berry for Heisman campaign a few weeks ago. Berry is the best defensive player in the SEC, and should continue to build on his stellar UT career in ’09.

Other names we'll hear early in the '09 season

Max Hall, BYU QB
Todd Reesing, Kansas QB
Daryll Clark, Penn State QB
The Brothers Rodgers, Oregon State RB & WR
A.J. Green, Georgia WR

Coming up in late July, my preseason predictions. Preseason & Postseason Top 30, Heisman prediction, bowl predictions, and much more! Stay tuned for the College Football Sideline Report!
