Allen Iverson To The Knicks?
Rumor is the Knicks are looking to blow most or all of their Mid-Level on Grant Hill, a move which, in my opinion, accomplishes nothing. He does not fill a position need and he is well past his prime. Walsh says he likes Hill because he is a veteran personality in the locker room, but they said the same thing about Malik Rose. We all know the sad end to that story.
Meanwhile, Allen Iverson is coming to grips with the fact that his value is in doubt and there are not many potential suitors for him. Word is he is now looking for a one year deal and that the Mid-Level exception should be enough to sign him.
I know Iverson did not play great last season, for whatever reason, but one thing everyone knows about him is that he is a fierce competitor with an ego the size of Jupiter, and that ego has been severely bruised this off-season.
Iverson playing with a purpose can be a beautiful thing, and I'm willing to bet that wherever he plays next year, he will be out to prove that he is still among the NBA's elite.
Signing him will not guarantee us a staring PG for the future but it will take some of the pressure of Chris Duhon and provide a veteran presence for the locker room. Everyone knows the Knicks aren't going to make a championship run next season, including the Knicks players.
The plan for the foreseeable future is cut salary and pray LeBron decides to come to New York. So in the meantime, why not take advantage of whatever gas A.I. has left in his tank to fill a roster need. It's not like there are any elite point guards available on the free agent market. D'Antoni's system is perfect for quick elusive guards and it's likely that Iverson won't feel as stifled as he did in Detroit.
I know the Knicks have taken a lot of chances in the past years, and that more often than not the regretted them, but if they are intent on rolling the dice on a veteran player would you rather take a risk on an injury prone SF or a tough-as-nails former MVP with something to prove?
