The Intangibles And The Rubio's.

Timber WolfJul 8, 2009

Unless your a complete bonehead, you know about David Kahn's situation on drafting Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn with the fifth and sixth pick in the draft.

Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn

Both are point guards, both have distribution skills, and both play exceptionally well on defense.

Flynn excels at on-the-ball defense, and uses his lateral quickness to get steals and lock down the offense, thus making him a lock down defender.

Rubio is a complete monster on defense, his wingspan is incredibly long for a 6'4" PG, oh and yeah, he's a 6'4'' point guard. He gets steals so easily, it's equivalent to an octopus thinking that its prey is a big orange fish in the shape of a basketball.

David Kahn has made repeated statements about Jonny Flynn and Rubio playing together. However, he has withdrawn some of those statements slightly, stating that they would'nt play like that for 40 minutes and ultimately, "it's up to the coach".

That got me thinking, the coach does have a say so in the roster don't they?

What if the coach comes in and says "neither of these players are ready to score, but both are ready to distribute?" and they cannot play off of each other due to this factor.

That is the most plausible situation. I see Ricky Rubio as a franchise player, not just a starter. Ricky Rubio has the potential to be the next Steve Nash, and that is rare. Jonny Flynn has a tremendous upside as well.

But if we pull all outside influences to the side, and just look at it from an upside standpoint and who can be better in the future, all fingers point to Rubio.

So the best case scenario is that Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn play point guard and shooting guard respectively, and they are a stealing and lock down force to be reckoned with. Ricky Rubio would defend shooting guards, which is something he could do, but it would be just like Randy Foye defending shooting guards, which does not improve the defense.

Jonny Flynn I believe can really lock down point guards of the NBA. He may not have an incredible wingspan, but his quickness, and the fact that he's built like a starting running back don't hurt at all.

I don't believe it's going to be great offensively, as Flynn and Rubio are not natural scorers yet. Rubio can kick the ball out from any angle, and it would be lovely if we had a three point shooter to catch it (Ryan Gomes and Wayne Ellington) and shoot it. I think if Corey Brewer can shoot 40 percent from the three point line for the whole season, and not 15 games, we have a deadly shooter.

Ultimately, it's a stretch for Rubio and Flynn to coincide, but since the Timberwolves aren't winning championships, who cares?

Let them play. Don't let them play. Either way, I see a trade happening for one of them, and If Rubio comes to Minnesota this year, I think Flynn will be traded, despite the fact that I love Flynn.

Ricky Rubio

Rubio has now matured, and despite playing for Minnesota being the option, he's trying to reduce his buyout himself, which means he wants to play. I figure if David Kahn tells Rubio "your going to get your 30 minutes at point guard, every night", then he'll be even happier.

Rubio has often pointed out that he wants a larger market, but a smaller market does not correlate endorsements, pure, raw talent does. LeBron James and Kevin Durant both have Nike endorsements. So if Rubio turns out to be "the best Rubio," then he will get his endorsements.

But now that the draft is over, the coaching search is on, and we have to know that Kahn is going to put his full faith in the coach he chooses, just as Glen Taylor has done for him.

I feel that if Rubio makes it over to Minnesota next year, then the coach could be an older retired NBA point guard. Rubio is going to need to be developed well, and he's going to have to have the right pieces surrounding him. I think Ellington is going to develop into a perennial three point shooter, and not to mention Corey Brewer who shot 40% from the 3-point line last year.

Ricky Rubio was drafted to be a franchise point guard, and that's what David Kahn's plan was.

He has stated "he's the starting point guard when he walks through those doors", "we have no intention on trading him or shipping him", "whether you like it or not, Ricky Rubio is a part of the Minnesota franchise".

In his rookie year, Rubio will average 12 points and 6 assists and a steal for the Timberwolves, and he might not be rookie of the year. But he will be a candidate, and if Rubio averages 5-6 assists his rookie year, hello Mr. Franchise!
