Sunday Recap
Ho-hum. Rich Froning Jr. is the Fittest Man on Earth. Again.
Just six days after his 27th birthday, the American took home first place in both thick 'n quick and double grace, helping him pull away from Matthew Fraser and the rest of the leaders for a dominant win—his fourth in as many years.
After Fraser, Jason Khalipa finished third, while Josh Bridges fell to fourth. The latter entered not far behind Froning, but 14th- and 23rd-place finishes in the two events sealed his fate outside the top three.
Your women's women is Camille Leblanc-Bazinet. The 25-year-old Canadian finished "just" 12th in the thick 'n quick and fifth in the double grace, but she had built herself a big enough lead with seven top-six finishes in the first 11 events that it didn't matter.
Nabbing her first win in five attempts, she was understandably ecstatic:
Leblanc was able to hold off Annie Thorisdottir, who had a marvelous day. The two-time CrossFit Games champion was able to climb the leaderboard, finishing second in thick 'n quick and first in double grace, but she came up just short.
While she missed out on her third title, it was a tremendous comeback for the Iceland native after missing the 2013 Games.
Julie Foucher and Michele Letendre rounded out the top four.
Saturday Recap
On the strength of solid performances on Friday and a progressively strong showing on Saturday, Rich Froning has a five-point lead over Matthew Fraser after 10 events.
Froning finished second in the push-pull event which gained him 20 points on Fraser who finished sixth.
Josh Bridges defeated Froning in an epic contest in the push pull. He certainly can't be counted out. Bridges is third on the leaderboard and just 12 points behind Froning.
Before Froning made his major move of the day in push-pull, he had to settle for 13th and 15th-place finishes in the muscle-up biathlon and the sprint carry events, respectively.
Luckily for Froning, these two events were won by Cody Anderson and Nate Schrader. Neither man is serious contender for the overall lead in the standings.
Anderson is 21st and Schrader is 22nd.
On the women's side Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet widened her lead over Kara Webb.
LeBlanc-Bazinet has finished first in only one event during the competition, but but a third and fifth-place finish on Saturday in the push-pull and clean speed ladder were good for 170 points.
Michele Letendre probably won't catch LeBlanc-Bazinet, but she did put on quite a show in the push-pull.
Letendre was a full 10 seconds quicker than the second-place finisher Nicole Holcomb.
Friday Recap
Things got off to a wild start Friday with The Beach, an event that saw Jordan Troyan emerge victorious with a time of 29:34.44, good for a cool 100 points and the top spot on the leaderboard for the men's side, as illustrated by DrinkFitAid:
A 30-year-old competitor who says he has "had a life changing experience due to CrossFit," Troyan's performance was just a hint of his future contention. He went on to struggle in the overhead squat, placing 43rd, but wound up in second place after the numbers for the Triple 3 went final.
Through three events on the men's side, it was Noah Ohlsen who held the lead after obtaining 14th place or better in each event.
The third event of the day, the Triple 3, was a blowout, as Rob Forte stormed to a 33:03.56 triumph, as the event's Twitter account humorously points out:
The women's side was every bit as competitive, with Kara Webb storming out to a major advantage in first place. Her 250-pound overhead squat was not only a jaw-dropping performance, but eight pounds better than the next competitor and enough to secure the top spot through three events.
Spectator Kathryn McLean captured the special moment:
Webb continued her dominant display with a fifth-place finish in the 21-15-9 complex. Her only true challenger appears to be Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, who finished 1st in that event. Julie Foucher ended the day in a distant third, 59 points behind Leblanc-Bazinet.
(For the uninitiated, the 21-15-9 complex is a combination of pull-ups and "thrusters", with the numbers corresponding to the amount of reps of each exercise done in a set.)
Jason Khalipa moved from third to first on the last event of the day, while Rich Froning broke into the top-5 with his first-place time of 4:16.63 in the 21-15-9 complex.
The CrossFit Games gave a look at the packed house watching the day's events unfold:
There are two more days of action to follow from the West Coast. If the early goings are any indication, the event won't encounter any problems truly weeding out the pretenders and crowning the fittest of all.
