Is Selling Emmanuel Adebayor Really The Right Thing For Arsenal?

Callum D'SouzaJul 8, 2009

Arsene Wenger promised he would strengthen the Arsenal squad after the North London-based side went its fourth consecutive season without a trophy.

But in order to bring in knew talent, you need money.

Compared to their rivals, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, Arsenal have very little money to spend. Having already lured Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax for 10 million, Arsenal don't exactly having a whole lot to sell.

However, Arsene Wenger could offload Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor to AC Milan for $20-30 million. This would allow Arsenal to attempt to sign a range of quality players, including a solid and strong central midfielder like Felipe Melo or Lorik Cana, and a striker suitable to replace Adebayor.

Wenger has expressed his longing to keep the squad that he has spent a number of years working on. Emmanuel Adebayor has also stated he is to continue playing his football at the Emirates, although Arsenal fans beg to differ.

Selling Adebayor does seem like a smart option for Arsenal.

It will allow some much-needed cash to come through, as well as relieving some of the pressure on the Arsenal strikers. Arsenal are currently situated with seven strikers, including Adebayor, Robin van Perise, Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela and Eduardo (the main pair), plus the likes of Theo Walcott and Andrei Asharvin able to play up front.

Although Adebayor may have had a slow season which was hampered with injury and drops in form. The lanky African front man provides speed, great aerial depth, balance, and trickery. The frontman also holds a very strong relationship with striker Robin van Persie. Van Persie was easily the best Arsenal player in 2008/2009, and when paired together, van Persie and Adebayor are an attack that's hard to stop.

If the Togolese international can return to the form that was evident in 2007/2008, Arsenal will surely be in with a great chance of a trophy.

Should Arsenal sell Emmanuel Adebayor, or should they hold onto the tall and imposing striker?
