WWE SmackDown: Spoiler-Free Preview for July 25

Ryan DilbertJul 24, 2014

The July 25 episode of WWE SmackDown marches on from Battleground, already starting the journey to SummerSlam.

Roman Reigns, Paige and Bray Wyatt all look to recover from losses at the pay-per-view as WWE visits Orlando, Florida. Can they score victories at Friday's SmackDown or will their rivals sabotage their chances?

Fans who packed the Amway Center when WWE taped the show on Tuesday or those have read the spoiler reports already know the answers to those questions. Everyone else will be waiting for SmackDown to air on Syfy on Friday night.

For those folks, the following is a preview of all the matches on tap with the results omitted.

Ryback and Curtis Axel vs. The Usos

RybAxel keeps hovering around tag team title contention.

Ryback knocked off Jey Uso with a clothesline to the throat on Tuesday's Main Event in singles action. That win has led to a clash with the champs.

Should he and Axel follow that victory with another on Friday's SmackDown, they would likely slide into the No. 1 contender's spot. An easy win for The Usos would point to The Wyatt Family getting one last crack at the belts or the duo of Stardust and Goldust challenging them at some point.

Are Ryback and Axel just fodder for the top teams or a pairing fans should take seriously? The result and the competitiveness of this bout will help answer that.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Bo Dallas

Coming off a non-title win against The Miz on Monday's Raw, Ziggler faces a Superstar in the midst of a winning streak. Dallas has yet to taste defeat in singles competition since rejoining the main roster.

He has often faced the company's pushoversfrom Xavier Woods to The Great Khali. Ziggler offers a tougher challenge.

The Show-Off's momentum is in danger of falling victim to Dallas'. Fans will soon see if WWE is truly behind Dallas and extends his stretch of victories or if Ziggler is going to get his own boost.

The one certainty here is that Ziggler is going to make Dallas' offense look fantastic, as his elite selling skills elevate his opponent's move set each time out.

Cesaro vs. Dean Ambrose (No Disqualification)

Cesaro and Ambrose collided on Monday's Raw, with The King of Swing looking to impress Triple H and perhaps earn a spot as a henchman for The Authority.

For much of the bout, Cesaro stomped and pounded on his foe. It was the Swiss Superstar, though, who ended the match wincing.

Ambrose smashed Cesaro's shoulder with a steel chair, earning himself a disqualification before frothing at the mouth.

The madman and strongman meet again on Friday's SmackDown. This time, there will be no disqualifications. Ambrose can get as nutty as he wants.

Paige vs. Naomi

After displaying a nastier side of herself on Monday's Raw, Paige takes on one half of what used to be The Funkadactyls.

Both women will be looking to prove that they are worthy of the next opportunity for the Divas title. An impressive win from either one of them would help them do just that.

Naomi will have to be on the lookout for Cameron, though. Their rivalry is likely not over, and this would be an opportune time for Cameron to hamper her enemy's pursuit of championship glory. AJ Lee may be worth monitoring as well.

In response to Paige pummeling her on Raw, AJ will eventually be looking for a chance at payback.

R-Truth vs. Bray Wyatt

When Chris Jericho laid bleeding in the locker room following an attack from The Wyatt Family, it was R-Truth who was at Y2J's side.

He now gets a chance to step up to that clan's patriarch and get a measure of revenge for his friend.

Wyatt enters as the heavy favorite. Only Jericho and John Cena have defeated him. Lesser stars like R-Truth have been the gazelles that he devours.

Thanks to Wyatt's power, viciousness and two "brothers" at his side, R-Truth is in danger of ending up like his buddy Jericho—in need of medical attention.

Roman Reigns vs. Alberto Del Rio

An enticing main event pits a former world champ against a man many expect to be holding gold of his own before long.

Reigns has plenty to prove here. He hasn't been in many high-profile singles matches. An impressive showing would go a long way toward him sustaining his current momentum. This could be another announcement of Reigns' readiness to ascend to the top tier or proof that he's in need of more experience first.

Del Rio is a top-notch ring worker and should help Reigns maximize his talents.

In terms of storyline, Reigns looks to be headed toward a match against Randy Orton at SummerSlam. Fans will be expecting Orton to play a role here. Will he stop a promising bout short or simply lurk while the action unfolds?

Even if Del Rio and Reigns don't get a lengthy match in, the lineup for Friday's SmackDown has great promise. The Ambrose-Cesaro rematch and which route WWE chooses for Dallas, Wyatt and the tag team division should be enough to draw fans in, inspiring them to set aside some time on Friday night.
