The Trolling at B/R, Pt. 2: Why These Acts Need To Be Stopped for Good

Old AccountJul 2, 2009

My four months at BleacherReport have been a joy-ride up to this point.

I have written 81 articles, achieved top 25 NFL writer status, 110 fans, and have been one of the many respected writers on this forum.

I've loved my time here at B/R. I've been asked to write for other sites because of my opportunity here within the open source sports network.

The homepage layout has proven to be a great success, with many writers getting more page views then ever before.

This site has experienced many positives impacts, whether it's the NFL correspondent spots, or getting your article posted on the front page of cbssports.com, usatoday.com, or other nationwide forums.

It's a great feeling that we all strive for, as we love to express ourselves through writing.

Yet, unfortunately, whenever you have good, the bad always comes along with it.

As I have experienced here at B/R, "trolling" has been a common theme.

Just a month ago, I wrote an article stressing the trolling and harassing at B/R, and why it needs to be stopped.

Yes, I got feedback from writers here, however, no sign of comment from the administration.

To me, trolling is simple harassment of one writer's work. Whether talking about the inner-self, giving threats or abuse of that sort, these acts need to be put a stop to.

The feature was given to us where we can block users on our board who tried to start trouble within the public eye.

That has worked to an extent; however, the trolling still continues.

The people who have nothing better to do than to use phony names to bring trouble to our talented writers need to be stopped.

I believe some type of action needs to be called against this.

From my standpoint, I have learned to ignore it. I let them say what they want, and don't go back at them to give them more energy than they already need.

Yet, many of these trolls have caught on, and all of these people are taking the same approachattacking the younger and newer writers, who aren't sure how to fight back and feed into the nonsense.

Don't you see? It's exactly what they craveattention.

Many of us think having a blocking option within the comments itself would stop the trolling, and I do agree with that.

I have people come to me, asking how to ban the trollers; however, we don't have the option to ban them ourselves, but rather to flag the comment, and wait for somebody to delete the comments.

I believe I speak within the community when I say the trolling needs to be banned once and for all.

Take espn.com, for example. Why do you think they have the insider section? After talking to a writer who did at one point have a column there, he told me they do this to prevent trolling of articles written by the top writers, such as Buster Olney.

The act of trolling and harassing on B/R happens each and every day. Some can ignore it, and don't let it upset them.

But what about the young ones who are affected by this? What about the writers who want to leave B/R after facing a troller?

It's not fair for these people to suffer by the trolls who love to put everyone down.

So I ask of you, B/Rplease stop the trolling once and for all.
