WWE WrestleMania 2014 Results: Most Shocking Victories from Sunday's Event
Each year, WWE’s WrestleMania spectacular gets exponentially bigger and more exciting, and the 2014 edition of the pay-per-view may have been one of the most unpredictable shows in wrestling history.
The most shocking victory from Sunday’s PPV was Brock Lesnar defeating The Undertaker and ending his vaunted streak. While John Cena taking the victory and Cesaro being the last man in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal were stunning, everything pales in comparison to The Undertaker taking the loss.
After 21 straight victories, The Undertaker’s streak is dead.
Here are all the victories that shocked us on the biggest stage of them all.
Brock Lesnar Beats the Streak
The Undertaker wasn’t supposed to lose.
There is no discounting the merits of Brock Lesnar, though. He is one of the most athletic wrestlers in WWE history and legitimately one of the toughest men to ever step foot in the ring, but there is no doubt that the part-time superstar shouldn’t have beat the streak.
Even if The Undertaker wanted to go out this way, it still doesn’t feel correct.
After going 21-0 in his career at WrestleMania, the legacy of The Undertaker is changed forever now that he has been defeated on the biggest stage of them all. While the rub for Lesnar and the heat he will get for the victory is immeasurable right now, the WWE Universe is genuinely stunned by the outcome of this match.
The Undertaker deserves the chance to say thank you to the fans on Monday’s edition of Raw, and the WWE could easily build to a match between Sting and The Deadman without the streak on the line.
For wrestling fans, though, there is a void in our hearts without the streak. It’s a solemn day in the WWE Universe.
John Cena Overcomes Adversity and Buries a Star
WrestleMania XXX should have been the PPV in which John Cena cemented his legacy as a top star by putting over the younger and more promising star Bray Wyatt. Instead, Cena has confirmed that he is no better than Hulk Hogan.
Cena buried Wyatt with his win and made the up-and-coming star look insignificant.
During the build to this matchup, Wyatt had looked incredible on the mic and even exceeded the performance from Cena. There are few men who can go toe-to-toe with Cena in promos, and Wyatt proved that he is one of those superstars.
Instead of getting the victory, Wyatt became the latest victim who couldn’t overcome Superman.
Cena proved nothing with this victory (except that he and the company officials have failed to build another star once again), and the public perception of the top star will only get worse.
If Cena thought he was getting booed before, wait until Monday’s backlash.
Cesaro Cements His Future
There were many stars who looked poised to hoist the Andre the Giant Memorial trophy after winning the Battle Royal—including Big Show, The Miz and many others—but it was Cesaro who stole the show with his inhuman strength.
After losing in the tag team championship match on the pre-show, Cesaro was a surprise entrant in the Battle Royal. After watching several of the biggest stars in the industry get eliminated by each other, Cesaro found himself one-on-one with the odds-on favorite, Big Show.
Just as Hogan picked up Andre the Giant and slammed him at WrestleMania III, Cesaro and his freakish strength threw Big Show over his shoulder and dumped him to the floor to steal the victory and cement his status as a bright star moving forward.
With a breakup of The Real Americans imminent and Cesaro being the first winner of the Andre the Giant trophy, the surprise victory did exactly what it was supposed to: It catapulted an unproved talent toward the top of the card.
