WWE WrestleMania 30: Stars Who Will Cement Their Legacies with Thrilling Matches
WrestleMania is the Showcase of the Immortals, the greatest event that professional wrestling has to offer. It has been home to some of the greatest matches and performances in WWE history and has catapulted wrestlers to superstardom.
It has also helped the sport's best solidify their legacies based on memorable performances. This Sunday night, April 6, four of the greatest stars to ever lace up a pair of boots will have the opportunity to do just that when they enter New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome for WrestleMania's 30th birthday.
The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar both have something to prove, as they battle one another in a titanic clash that will determine the fate of The Deadman's storied undefeated streak.
Triple H will take on Daniel Bryan in the match most anticipated by fans. Will The Game prove that he still has what it takes to compete on the level of the young stars of today's WWE?
John Cena takes on the young Bray Wyatt in a match that may very well have the best build of any on the card. Will he be able to right the one wrong from his WrestleMania resume and help elevate Wyatt to the top of the industry?
With the fate of the WrestleMania card depending on them, here is a look at how those four stars can solidify their entire legacies in a single night.
Brock Lesnar
1 of 4
The Beast Incarnate, for all of the hype that surrounds him, has yet to have that one truly defining performance at WrestleMania.
Sure, his bout with Kurt Angle at WrestleMania XIX was a classic wrestling match, but Lesnar's infamous botched Shooting Star Press, coupled with Angle's heroic performance while dealing with a severely injured neck, overshadowed the performance of the former WWE and UFC heavyweight champion.
Sunday night, he has the opportunity to make up for an awful match against Goldberg at WrestleMania XX and a disappointing showing last year against Triple H when he meets Undertaker in one of the top-billed matches at this year's event.
Lesnar has delivered two of the best performances of his career in matches against John Cena and CM Punk since returning in 2012. His work to this point can be categorized as "very good" at worst, and with one of the biggest matches of his career coming up this weekend, he should be motivated to steal the show.
A great match against The Phenom at WrestleMania carries more weight than any other bout of the card. The Streak has become as important, if not more so, than any championship that could possibly be defended, and every year, fans return to WWE programming just to see who will challenge the unblemished win-loss record of The Deadman and, more importantly, if they will be able to succeed. That means there is a tremendous amount of pressure associated with that spot on the card, and as a result, a great match can become instantly immortalized.
A thrilling match against the most respected and enduring character in WWE history would cement Lesnar's status as not only one of the best big men to ever step foot in a ring, but also as a Superstar who delivered in the biggest of matches despite a reputation for only caring about a paycheck.
Triple H
2 of 4
In a recent interview with BetweentheRopes.com, transcript by WrestlingInc.com, 2004 Hall of Fame inductee Harley Race called Triple H the best wrestler in the world.
"Right now, I'd have to say Hunter because I watched his style, he's a lot of mind and he took it and put it to a frame that became his. He's just good at what he does.
"
Race points to the cerebral nature with which The Game approaches his work, and it is hard to argue. Triple H has always been a thinking man's wrestler, a ring general whose timing is impeccable and who is always two or three steps ahead of his fellow workers when it comes to planning spots and finishes that make sense within the context of the story being told. He is a master storyteller whose place in the Hall of Fame is not in doubt.
With all of that said, it has been a very long time since Triple H had a truly great match outside of his Undertaker series in 2011-12. He has had very good matches with the likes of Brock Lesnar, Sheamus and Randy Orton over the last four years, but he has not had that one match against anyone other than the Dead Man that has reminded fans that he can still deliver the Match of the Year candidates he had become known for in the past.
Sunday night, he has his best opportunity in years to deliver an outstanding match that proves he still has it from bell to bell. Bryan is the perfect performer for him to work with. There is no hotter wrestler on the planet right now, and the crowd reaction to the match will be electrifying. Triple H has always fed off of the crowd, and in doing so has responded with great intensity. The matches have benefited tremendously as a result.
A great match against Bryan would go a long way in supporting the great Harley Race's claim while also giving Triple H one match that really proves his excellence across generations.
John Cena
3 of 4
John Cena is one of the best big-match performers of his generation. He has delivered time and time again in matches against legendary performers like Triple H and Shawn Michaels, greats such as Batista, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, and wrestlers with lesser reputations like Umaga, Bobby Lashley and Great Khali.
WrestleMania 30 will be a bit of redemption for the leader of the Cenation, however. Three years ago, he had the opportunity to make The Miz a household name, a legitimate top-tier star in WWE, and then proceeded to have one of the worst main event matches in the event's long and illustrious history. This year, he takes on the enigmatic and young Bray Wyatt, who is stealing nearly every show he appears on thanks to unrivaled microphone skills and an explosive offensive skill set.
A great match against Wyatt would only add to what is already an extraordinary legacy. He is the industry's top star and also its most polarizing. He has sold out arenas across the globe and accumulated championships from one end of the country to the other. He has headlined WrestleManias and taken part in some of the greatest matches in the event's history.
A great match against Wyatt will only further add to a legacy that will one day be far more respected and admired than it currently is.
The Undertaker
4 of 4
Since WrestleMania 23 in 2007, there has been no Superstar who has consistently delivered the best match on the card at the Showcase of the Immortals than The Undertaker. He has rapidly eclipsed some of the greatest athletes to ever step foot on the grandest stage professional wrestling has to offer, and on Sunday night, he could move his name closer to the top of the list of greatest WrestleMania performers with a strong performance against Brock Lesnar.
There are few performers who have achieved the level of greatness at a single event than Undertaker has at WrestleMania. Even rarer is when that greatness is achieved against an array of opponents with a variety of different styles, like the ones The Deadman has shared the ring with.
He has taken on tremendously talented ring workers, such as Shawn Michaels and CM Punk; hybrid performers such as Triple H and Edge; and straight powerhouses like Batista. In each case, he has delivered an original and high-quality match.
Brock Lesnar presents The Phenom with his greatest challenge. Lesnar is a tremendously physical worker who punishes his opponents with unmatched power, but he can also take them down and work a mat-based style when necessary. Can The Undertaker, who has battled numerous injuries over the last five years, take the punishment and still hold up long enough to deliver the classic match fans expect of him at the show?
They will find out Sunday night.
