Champions League Results 2014: Scores and Recap from Tuesday's Quarter-Finals

Joseph ZuckerApr 1, 2014

First you get the away goals, and then you get the power.

Both Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid scored critical goals away from home in 1-1 draws that put them in great positions for next week's second leg of the 2013-14 Champions League quarter-final.

Both matches had their moments, but Atletico's draw with Barcelona was particularly enthralling. Manchester United held out well, but they're a step below Bayern at the moment.

The ties themselves are far from over, but you can't help feeling that one club has clearly put itself ahead of its opponent.

Manchester United 1-1 Bayern Munich

Manchester United only have themselves to blame after earning a 1-1 home draw against Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils arguably could've won the match, but instead, they surrendered an all-important away goal to the reigning European champions and now have it all to do at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.

A lot of people will be talking about Danny Welbeck's miss in the 40th minute. The United striker was bearing down on goal with only Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to beat. His chipped effort was saved, and had Neuer not been there, the shot looked to be sailing off target anyway.

When facing a team of Bayern's caliber, missing a chance like that can prove monumental.

However, theScore's Richard Whittall came to Welbeck's defence:

Nemanja Vidic scored 18 minutes later to put United briefly up 1-0. It was a great header from the Serbian centre-back. His momentum was taking him away from goal, but he found the back of the net anyway.

Bastian Schweinsteiger equalized in the 66th minute. It was a nifty finish from the Bayern midfielder, but as many pointed out, the marking from Marouane Fellaini left Schweinsteiger with a ton of space.

Kyle McCarthy of FoxSoccer.com thought United gave up the goal way too easily:

Manchester United couldn't afford to make that many important mistakes and expect to walk away with anything better than a draw.

In truth, Bayern weren't all that impressive. They had 74 percent of the possession but just three shots on target.

As Opta's David Wall pointed out, the German side was passing the ball around the pitch quite a bit, but not really doing anything with that possession:

The biggest development of the match may have been Schweinsteiger's sending off. After picking up two yellow cards, he'll be out for the second leg along with Javi Martinez, who is out on yellow card accumulation, per Fox Soccer:

With both Martinez and Schweinsteiger out, the door opened up a little bit more for United.

Barcelona 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Many thought a player named Diego would play a major role in this fixture. However, Diego Ribas wasn't the one people had in mind.

The Brazilian midfielder fired in an absolute cracker of a goal in the 56th minute. His shot from 30 yards out flew into the top left corner, leaving Jose Pinto no chance at making the save.

Surprisingly, that was the first goal Barca have conceded from outside the box at the Nou Camp since 2011, per OptaJose:

The goal came 26 minutes after Diego was subbed on for Diego Costa, who pulled his hamstring, per AS English:

Atletico manager Diego Simeone said after the match that he's unsure how long Costa may be out:

The fact that Atleti hung around for so long and then took the lead without their best striker is a testament to how balanced and talented this squad is.

Neymar leveled the match in the 71st minute. Andres Iniesta threaded a perfect through ball to the Brazilian forward, who placed it nicely at the far post. Neymar will get credit for the goal, but he wouldn't have scored without that great assist from Iniesta:

Even with the score level going into the second leg and Atletico having an away goal, you'd have to favor Barcelona to go through.

Atleti will likely be without their best scoring threat, and Thibaut Courtois won't stand on his head as much as he did on Tuesday:

Courtois fancies his team's chances, though, saying after the match, per UEFA, "I think we played well. We will look to play a similar game in the second leg, to close them down and look to strike on the counter-attack. At the Vicente Calderón, playing in front of our fans it will be like having an extra player on the field."

It should be a great tactical battle next Wednesday.
