Olympic 2014 Medal Count: Dissecting Final Day 14 Results and Medal Tally

Alex EspinozaFeb 21, 2014

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi are wrapping things up with just a weekend left of competition, but Friday marked another day full of intense action across a wide range of sports.

In North America, all eyes were on the men's hockey tournament, as the United States and Canada duked it out 24 hours after the Canadian women won gold against their American counterparts. On Friday, Team Canada goalie Carey Price recorded a 31-save shutout to propel his team to a 1-0 victory past Team USA and into the gold-medal game against Sweden.

Both nations are near the top of the total medal count leaderboard following Friday's action. Here's an updated look at the standings and a wrap up of the top Day 14 headlines.

The much-anticipated USA-Canada matchup was a back-and-forth affair, as both teams peppered Price and American goalie Jonathan Quick with shots throughout all three periods. In the end, Jamie Benn's goal from traffic in close range in the second period was enough for Canada's victory.

The victory also had some other major ramifications for both countries. Earlier in the week, a Chicago-area billboard posted a tongue-in-cheek wager in advance of the Olympic semifinal.

Now, Team USA is headed to a bronze-medal matchup against Finland, which lost to Sweden, 2-1, in Friday's other semifinal. And as NBC noted, the Americans might have to adopt Canadian pop icon Justin Bieber.

In other Olympic news on Friday, Canadians love them some curling.

The men's team defeated Great Britain, 9-3, in the gold-medal match a day after the Canadian women knocked off Sweden, 6-3, in their respective final. This time around, the Canadians were led by skip Brad Jacobs, who helped give the country an Olympic three-peat in the competition.

Meanwhile, the United States received another individual gold medal from 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin, a Colorado native who made some history with her first-place finish in the women's slalom.

Even though Shiffrin entered this event as the favorite, she didn't make it easy on herself to win. David Leon Moore of USA Today described the drama during her second run:

"

With a big lead going into the second run, she survived a near fall about halfway down the course in a moment that caused who knows how many gasps from those who saw it live or on TV.

"It was a pretty crazy moment there," Shiffrin said. "I went out of the start, and I was like, 'I'm going fast.' Then I went out of that flush and was like, 'I'm not gonna make it. I'm not gonna make it.' I threw on a hockey stop right there. That was a little bit tough. It scared me half to death."

She avoided a fall, though, and finished with a two-run time of 1 minute, 44.54 seconds, beating silver medalist [Marlies] Schild by 0.53 seconds and bronze medalist Kathrin Zettel, also of Austria, by 0.81 seconds.

"

Friday was also an emotional day for the Ukranian women's biathlon team of Juliya Dzhyma, Olena Pidhrushna, Valj Semerenko and Vita Semerenko, who won the 4x6-kilometer relay with a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes, 2.5 seconds against the backdrop of the civil strife in their capital of Kiev.

It marked the country's first gold medal at the XXII Winter Games, and as Ukranian Olympic pole vault champion Sergey Bubka noted, the women realized the magnitude of the moment.
