Kaitlyn Farrington's Halfpipe Gold Foreshadows Team USA's Continued Dominance

Jesse ReedFeb 12, 2014

Twenty-four-year-old American snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington won gold in the women's halfpipe event on Wednesday, proving Team USA will be a force to be reckoned with in this event for 2018 and beyond.

Here's the newest U.S. Olympic champ celebrating her momentous achievement, courtesy of USA Today:

Farrington put together three solid runs, saving her best for last with a final-run score of 91.75, which beat the 2010 gold-medal winner, Australia's Torah Bright, by just one-quarter of a point. Incredibly, per NBC's Skylar Wilder, she changed up her routine at the last second before hitting the final run:

"I'm going to dance my face off," she excitedly proclaimed after unexpectedly winning the event, per Rachel Axon of USA Today Sports. "I fought to get in finals," Farrington added, as noted by the Associated Press, via ESPN.com. "I did all three rounds. To come out on top, I couldn't believe it."

Heading into the Games, the Americans were expected to dominate this event, but nobody had Farrington atop the list of U.S. riders capable of winning the gold.

Instead, Kelly Clark and Hannah Teter were considered America's best hope of claiming the honor, and for good reason.

Heading into the Games, Clark was a two-time medalist in the halfpipe (gold in 2002 and bronze in 2010) and a one-time world champ (2012), while Teter had won two Olympic medals herself (gold in 2006 and silver in 2010).

Meanwhile, Farrington sneaked into her first Games well under the radar, having never won a gold medal in any major international competition.

"Who would have known she was going to win this thing? I don’t think anybody knew that was coming," Teter said, as relayed by Houston Mitchell and Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times. "Surprise, Surprise."

While the shocking victory is the big story of the hour, there are bigger implications surrounding Farrington's performance: Simply put, America's tenure as the undisputed monarch of women's halfpipe snowboarding is nowhere close to coming to an end.

2014 represented the fifth Winter Games in which the women's halfpipe was contested. In 16 years, 15 total medals have been awarded, and of those 15, Team USA has accumulated eight of them—just over half.

Many wondered if there was anyone coming up behind Clark and Teter to carry the torch for the Americans after the 2014 Games, given the fact that both will be well into their 30s when the 2018 Winter Games roll around.

Of course, such speculation was based on the assumption that they'd be the top Americans this year, which obviously didn't turn out to be the case.

Instead, the future arrived four years early.

Farrington will be 28 years old when the 2018 Games in in PyeongchangSouth Korea roll around.

She'll likely be a top leader for Team USA when the time arrives—much like Clark was this year—and will be a favorite to medal. Given the team's incredible run of success, nobody should be surprised if she's joined by another youngster on the podium, either.

Team USA's future in Olympic women's halfpipe events appears brighter than ever, with Farrington leading the charge.
