Liverpool Transfer News: Dissecting Brendan Rodgers' Latest Comments
The January midseason transfer window is winding down, but Premier League contenders Liverpool have yet to make a real splash despite a growing injury list.
Reds manager Brendan Rodgers recently addressed reporters to provide an update on where the squad stands ahead of the Friday, Jan. 31 deadline.
Rodgers acknowledged that the Reds have been unlucky with injuries, but he made it clear that the club will only look to add players who will impact the starting unit moving forward, per Phil Reade of LiverpoolFC.com:
"We have to wait and see on that. There's certainly nothing imminent. But we always felt if we could do [business] then it was something we wanted to do.
I said all along this was a group that we needed that wee bit of luck with to keep clear of injury and unfortunately we've been hit by a bad run of injuries.
I'm just reluctant to bring in anyone that is just going to stockpile players. We need to bring in players that are really going to affect the starting XI. And if we can't do that, then we won't be doing anything.
"
Rodgers made sure to avoid making any promises to Liverpool fans, but he was candid in expressing just how difficult the process can be, per Reade:
"The club is working hard on that to find the players; it's just a very difficult market to find the player and do a deal and to get it over the line. We won't stop until the very end and hopefully we can."
The theme of Rodgers' conversation with reporters was that he has full confidence in his current players to keep the squad on track and on pace to earn a top-four finish in 2013-14. It's certainly difficult to argue with Rodgers' stance given just how dominant Liverpool have been offensively and overall at Anfield.
Not to mention, he has to be encouraged by the play of both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

The dynamic duo has combined for 33 Premier League goals this season and has been a massive key to the Reds' overall success to this point.
As Rodgers points out, if the club fails to bring on an influential player before the deadline, the current players will likely be even more inspired to sacrifice and finish the season strong, per Reade:
"What I do know is that we've got a group here that is fighting and if no-one comes in, that will galvanise us even more and we'll really focus in on the players that we have."
But there are no guarantees that added motivation will lead to success in the standings.
Liverpool's splendid start to the 2013-14 campaign has given Rodgers and the club's supporters every reason to believe the current unit is capable of achieving a top-four finish this coming spring, but the Reds cannot be content to simply watch the deadline pass.
The Reds have been linked with several players over the course of the January window, including Thomas Ince, via Sky Sports, Saul Niguez, via Simon Jones of the Daily Mail Online, Andre Gomes, via Duncan Castles of The Sunday Times and Romulo, via Ben Jefferson of The Express. But keep in mind that it remains unclear just how much interest Liverpool have in the aforementioned players and how realistic a potential move would be.
Even if the club cannot hook a marquee name with the potential to make an immediate impact, they've got to consider the short-term implications of playing the transfer window too safe.
