Premier League Week 13 Picks: Full List of Predictions Ahead of the Weekend

Leigh WalshNov 25, 2013

The chasing pack will be eager to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal when Week 13 gets under way.

The Gunners, who travel to Cardiff City this weekend, are four points clear at the top after returning to winning ways against Southampton on Saturday.

The pick of this weekend’s clashes sees Tottenham entertain Manchester United and Southampton travel to Chelsea, but there are also some crucial clashes to keep an eye on at the opposite end of the table.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United

Andre Villas-Boas has some thinking to do ahead of Manchester United’s visit to White Hart Lane this weekend.

Spurs’ defensive record had somewhat disguised their frailties in front of goal during the opening quarter of the season. But now, after shipping seven goals in their last two games and scoring none, Tottenham’s deficiencies in the attacking third are there for all to see.

Spurs have looked disjointed going forward, scoring just nine goals in their opening 12 games. Their build-up play has lacked patience and too often they are consigned to speculative shots from distance.

Villas-Boas’ tinkering in midfield hasn't helped. The chopping and changing has disrupted the team, and it has limited the opportunities for newer members of the side to gel together.

Spurs picked up four points against United last season, but the Red Devils have historically dominated the rivalry, boasting a 26-game unbeaten run against the North London outfit before last season—per 11v11.

The champions are unbeaten in their last 10 games, but their 2-2 draw with Cardiff showed that there are still plenty of hurdles that need jumping before they can be considered title challengers.

With Robin van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick out injured, United were without the spine of their team, and it showed. They lacked composure on the ball, and they were opened up far too easily against a side that have averaged less than a goal a game, allowing Cardiff 14 shots at goal—per David Ornstein at BBC Sport.

According to Jamie Jackson in the Guardian, both van Persie and Vidic look set to return this week, which should help their cause in North London.

While plenty of questions remain for Moyes, it would appear that Villas-Boas’ problems run deeper.

Three of Spurs’ four losses this season have come after Europa League matches. Expect that stat to become four of five this Sunday.

Cardiff City vs. Arsenal

No matter the outcome of the game in Wales, Arsenal will remain top of the league when Week 13 concludes.

But that won’t stop Arsene Wenger’s charges from going all out for three points when they visit Cardiff City Stadium, where Manchester City and Manchester United have both dropped points this season.

Malky Mackay has set out his team in a way that makes them very difficult to beat. With Steven Caulker marshalling an organised back four, and Gary Medel cleaning up in front of them, Cardiff have looked solid, but they will face one of their toughest challenges of the season this weekend.

The Gunners continued their impressive free-flowing form with victory over the in-form Southampton, and they will be eager to hold onto their four-point advantage at the top of the table.

Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla provided the attacking flair on Saturday, but it was Olivier Giroud who once more shone the brightest.

The Frenchman has been in remarkable form this season, scoring nine goals and assisting a further five—per ESPN FC—and he will be a handful for Caulker and Co. this weekend.

His performances at the head of the Arsenal attack have been vital to their success. His play with his back to goal is second to none, and he brings his teammates into play with his excellent ability to hold the ball up and link up the play.

If Arsenal can produce the football that has entertained us on so many occasions this season then they should be too much for Cardiff.

But Malky Mackay’s side have proven on more than one occasion this season that they can’t be counted out.
