Pacquiao vs. Rios Results: Pac-Man Dismisses Bam Bam with Ease
Both fighters came into this fight needing a big win to turn things around, but it was Manny Pacquiao who came out on top with a nearly perfect performance against Brandon Rios.
Entering this fight, Pacquiao had lost his last two fights and was needing a win, as there were rumors emerging that he might retire if he lost this one. For Rios, he lost the first fight of his career in his previous fight and was trying to make sure that he didn't lose his second in a row.
Everything went right for Pac-Man in this one, even from the start. As soon as the first bell rang, Pacquiao appeared to be in control. He landed some very nice shots at the start of the fight, even forcing Bam Bam to slip in the first round. His pace was fast and he the more busy of the two fighters.
The second round was a bit better for Rios, as he was able to keep up with Manny to start the round. It was arguably a better overall round for Rios, but an incredibly finish by Pacquiao that featured a number of big punches helped him out quite a bit.
There were some interesting evens that showed just how good Pacquiao was in the third and fourth rounds. In the third, Rios was able to get Pac-Man into the corner and started swinging. However, Pacquiao was able to duck out of the corner and came up with a big counter punch that led to a flurry of blows.
In the fourth round, both fighters were tied up together, and it looked like the ref would break to two up. In fact, Pacquiao paused to look at the ref to see if he would stop, when Rios landed a relatively big shot on him, but Manny quickly recovered.
Then Pacquiao pulled away for good.
The fifth round featured what could have been the punch of the night. Pacquiao landed a devastating straight left on Rios that clearly knocked him back, and it was all downhill from there. Pac-Man kept the pressure on and continued to toy with Rios by dominating him in almost every possible way.
The damage started to show in the sixth round, when Pacquiao opened up a cut on the face of Rios. Manny landed another big straight and didn't even look tired as he continued to land combos without any trouble.
For the rest of the fight, Pacquiao controlled the pace and was rarely touched. He kept the pressure on and kept landing big shots throughout the second half of the fight. To Rios's credit, he refused to go down, even smiling after taking some big hits.
However, it was Pacquiao's fight the whole time, and he won by unanimous decision. According to the official scorecard provided by Kevin Iole from Yahoo! Sports, one judge had Manny winning every single round, while the other two had him winning 11 and 10 respectively:
For Pacquiao, he moves to 55-5-2 over his career with the win while also proving that he's still one of the best fighters in the world, even at 34 years old. For Rios, he got his first real test against a top-tier fighter and was demolished, which may make it very hard for him to get another fight against some of the best fighters in the world.
It is unclear what's next for Pacquiao, but after such an impressive performance, it's certainly clear that Pac-Man's age hasn't slowed him down, at least not yet.
