Andy Ruiz vs. Tor Hamer: Winner, Round-by-Round Highlights and Recap
This wasn't a mixed-martial arts contest, but Andy Ruiz Jr. (21-0, 15 KO) made Tor Hamer (21-3) submit on Saturday night in Macao, China. After Hamer had a solid first two rounds, Ruiz Jr. unleashed bombs to the head and body in the third. Left hooks to the body changed Hamer's disposition and his mind about competing on Saturday night.
For the second time in less than a year, Hamer quit on his stool. The 30-year-old also chose not to continue during his bout with Vyacheslav Glazkov in December after absorbing a few hard shots. Perhaps this boxing thing just isn't for him.
Let's not allow Hamer's unwillingness to mix it up detract from Ruiz's performance. Here's a round-by-round look at this short bout.
Round One
The hefty heavyweight showed off his fast hands and punching power, but not early on. Ruiz took some solid shots from Hamer in the first six minutes of the bout. Hamer appeared to control distance well and his jab straight-right combination was effective.
Round Two
Hamer was still looking good midway through the second round, but a funny thing happen in the last minute of this frame...Ruiz Jr. actually tagged him back. The first disposition change occurred here, but the worst was yet to come in the next round.
Round Three
This one was all Ruiz. He came forward and whacked Hamer with hard combinations. He backed him against the ropes and landed two hard left hands to the midsection. When the second one landed, the look on Hamer's face was like Martin Lawrence's after he fought Thomas Hearns in that hilarious episode of Martin.
"Gina, I don't wanna fight no mo."
Between the third and fourth round, Hamer retired—not from the sport, though that may be coming—and Ruiz remained undefeated.
