Manny Pacquiao Fight Time: Last-Minute Preview for Pac-Man's Bout vs. Rios
The time for talk, previews and predictions is drawing to a close. In a matter of hours, Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios will take the ring in Macao with an immeasurable amount at stake.
This isn't about money—at least not totally. All things in boxing ultimately come down to the dollar, but pride is also the star of this event. What is the bare minimum required for both fighters to leave this scrap better for the experience?
Pacquiao Must Impress
For all intents and purposes, Pacquiao's career is on the line. If he blows through Rios, some will say "it was only Brandon Rios. This was just a tune-up fight." That wouldn't be an inaccurate statement, but it is better than the alternative.
If Pacquiao loses or struggles, the critics will bombard him with questions about a lackluster performance against an opponent most believe he should beat. Speculation about the affects of the KO loss against Juan Manuel Marquez will become the primary story associated with Pac-Man, and he'll be labeled damaged goods.
For a proud and legendary champion like Pacquiao, having to face such an unfortunate reality would be quite a blow. Surely, in Pacquiao's mind, he must win and win going away. Anything less than a dominant performance that ends in a knockout would be a disappointment.
Rios Must at Least Be Competitive
If this fight looks like Pacquiao's destruction of Antonio Margarito—which is a possibility—Rios will be exposed as a B-class fighter who'll never have a chance to beat the more talented fighters in his weight region.
Up until now, his biggest win came over Mike Alvarado. "Mile High Mike" is a solid fighter, but if he's the crown jewel on your resume, you can't consider yourself elite. An upset win would do wonders for Rios' career and his bank account. However, simply remaining competitive will further his tough guy image and land him a few more high-profile opportunities.
Can this odd dynamic produce a great fight? I sure hope so.
