England vs. New Zealand Rugby 2013: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Tom SunderlandJun 5, 2018

This weekend provides both England and New Zealand with the opportunity to make a huge stamp on the history books when the pair meet at Twickenham.

For the visitors, it's a chance to gain revenge for the 38-21 defeat suffered in London last December, as well as preserve their unbeaten 2013 record and cement their status as "the best team in sport," a label given to them by Stuart Lancaster, BBC Sport.

For England it's an opportunity to remind the southern hemisphere giants that there still lies a power north of the equator, and Lancaster's side can win back-to-back games against New Zealand for just the second time in international rugby.

Main Storylines

Experience a Telling Factor

Saturday will see Dan Carter win his 100th cap for the New Zealand national team and join hallowed company in his achievement, becoming just the fifth player ever to achieve the feat (three of whom are in the squad with him).

It has been well covered that this New Zealand squad is one of the most experienced ever to tour, and Steve Hansen's starting lineup has an incredible 842 caps between them—per the All Blacks' official website—while Lancaster's England boast just 314.

What's more, while there are only two players in Hansen's XV who boast fewer than 20 senior caps, the English look far less seasoned considering there are 10 stars in England's XV yet to reach that feat.

It's bound to be a factor, particularly if the game becomes tight and requires players to perform under pressure. The All Blacks will be far more experienced on the big occasion compared to a squad of England players, several of whom will be having the unique experience of facing New Zealand for the first time.

Lancaster's Best XV

While there may be a big gap in terms of experience held by each squad, the home team can take small comfort in the fact their coach appears to be settled on his best XV, at least for this moment in time.

Competing alongside injuries to the likes of Alex Corbisiero and Manu Tuilagi, the crux of Lancaster's side has begun to take shape; this will be the third match in a row that Billy Twelvetrees and Joel Tomkins line up in the centres.

The only change from last week's squad that beat Argentina is that Dan Cole comes back into the front row for Bath's David Wilson, but England should have a great feel for one another at this stage.

Lancaster was handed the tools for a very experimental autumn series but has handled his responsibilities well thus far. Whether or not his squad selections have been the right ones will be tested to the extreme in this weekend's November climax.

All Blacks' Wings Look Green

While the All Blacks' squad is superbly seasoned across the board, one area that does stick out as especially unpolished is the wings.

Between them, Charles Piutau and Julian Savea have just 27 caps. To put that into perspective, their captain Richie McCaw has 122 caps, just shy of four times their combined amount.

Both speedsters have shown their own bouts of prolific potential in recent weeks, earning strong comparisons to Jonah Lomu along the way, but it may be an area of weakness that England look to target (albeit a very mild weakness).

Lancaster's side love to utilise the high ball, and it will be no surprise if the game plan on Saturday is to target the flanks in order to gain territory.

A fascinating battle awaits.

Prediction: England 18-29 New Zealand
