Analysing Sergio Aguero's Performance vs. CSKA Moscow

Rob GoldbergNov 5, 2013

Sergio Aguero has been one of the top scorers in the English Premier League this season, but he showcased his ability on an international stage with a strong showing against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

Manchester City entered their Champions League match against Moscow in need of a win in order to keep pace with Bayern Munich in Group D.

Of course, a victory alone would put the squad in good shape toward earning a spot in the tournament's knockout stage.

Within the first few minutes of the match, Aguero made it clear that he was going to do anything necessary to help his squad get those three points.

The Argentine got the first goal of the match in the third minute on a penalty shot after David Silva drew a foul in the box. He calmly took the spot-kick and fired it to the right side of the net outside of the goalkeeper's reach.

Only moments into the match, Aguero had scored for the sixth game in a row for Manchester City.

Aside from the home loss to Bayern Munich in early October, the striker has scored in all of his eight most recent starts, including four multi-goal performances.

Of course, the talented forward was nowhere close to being finished. He doubled the lead for his side on a play he created almost on his own after getting the ball in the box in the 20th minute.

Fox Soccer Trax does a good job of describing the play:

A few minutes later, he helped turn a competitive match into a rout by creating an opportunity for his teammate, Alvaro Negredo. This time, it is the club's official Twitter account describing the play:

Wayne Veysey, of Goal.com, was one of many who really liked what he saw out of this attack:

The truth is that it all comes down to Aguero. City obviously have loads of talent on the offensive end, including Silva, Negredo and Yaya Toure, plus distributors such as Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko.

However, it is their leading scorer who is carrying the club at the moment.

Aguero is tied with Daniel Sturridge for the EPL lead with eight goals and he appears to be just getting started. After scoring only 12 times last season, he appears set for another 20-goal year as he proves to be one of the best in the league at his position.

Amazingly, he puts himself in the conversation of the best strikers in Europe after an incredible display against a quality UCL opponent.

Even though he has a long way to go to match Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and a few others as the top goalscorers in the world, the 25-year-old star will have plenty of time to prove himself.

After Manchester City went down early in this tournament a year ago, they are ready to make a deep run this time around. If they do, you can be certain that Aguero will be there making impressive plays every step of the way.
