Shane Warne Slams Boring Alastair Cook Before Australia vs. England Ashes Series

Nick AkermanJun 1, 2018

Shane Warne has reopened fire on England captain Alastair Cook as the Three Lions ready themselves for yet another Ashes battle with Australia.

The 44-year-old cricketing legend—who will once again be part of Sky Sports’ commentary team during the series—has labelled Cook "negative" and "boring" in the lead-up to England’s trip down under, per Lawrence Booth of the Daily Mail:

"

Cook can be negative, boring, not very imaginative - and still win and be pretty happy.

But I think he needs to be more imaginative. If Australia play well and he continues to captain the way he does, I think England are going to lose the series.

Warne has continued to criticise Cook’s style over the last few months and claimed the nation won the last Ashes series in spite of his captaincy, as written in the retired player's Daily Telegraph column from Aug. 14:

"

The reason Australia had a chance was because of some bad bowling, some excellent batting and some very negative and defensive tactics from Cook.

It is as if England’s first aim is not to lose rather than try to win.

"

As highlighted in Booth’s report, Warne also remains critical of Joe Root, who largely struggled against the Aussies. He also signalled a combative attitude toward former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting, who criticised his former teammate in a recent book.

Warne’s typically outspoken and critical views fail to surprise the English contingency. The former Hampshire spinner isn’t the type of individual who holds back, especially when his opinion may unsettle the opponent's camp.

England top-order batsman Jonathan Trott defended Cook to Sky Sports and suggested Warne’s comments are to be expected as the return of the Ashes draws closer:

"

There are seven hours to fill each day and five days - that's a lot of hours for people to talk and for players to get scrutinised. To win a series 3-0 - I don't think your tactics can be that bad.

"

The next Ashes series takes place between Nov. 21 and Jan. 7, providing Australia with the perfect opportunity to reclaim the urn they last won during the corresponding series in 2006-07.

The Baggy Greens have emerged victorious in five out of the last six series on home turf, providing the home fans with real optimism for the upcoming battle.

We can expect plenty more from Warne across the following months, as the man who took 195 wickets in 36 Tests against England continues to make an impression on the game long after his retirement.
