Preview for Tuesday's Matches

Several of the contests scheduled for Tuesday could be headliners in various circumstances, but the match with the most intrigue is arguably Arsenal's clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Arsene Wenger has turned things around at Emirates Stadium, guiding the Gunners to two-point lead in the Premier League table through Week 8 of the 2013-14 season. Behind a strong debut for Mesut Ozil and consistent play up front, Arsenal haven't lost a match since August.

But Dortmund are just one point shy of Bayern Munich's lead in Bundesliga play so far, and have the luxury of carrying a squad just a few months removed from a deep Champions League run last season.

Midfielder Mathieu Flamini is expected to miss the clash with a concussion, so Arsenal will have their hands full slowing down a Dortmund side featuring Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho and Chelsea will travel to Germany for a showdown with Schalke 04, the latter of whom are fifth in the Bundesliga table. The Blues currently trail only Arsenal in the EPL standings and have won their last three matches by a wide margin.

Schalke is currently first in the Group E table, but Chelsea can make a move to the top of the heap with a win and the accompanying three points.

Staying in Group E, Steaua Bucuresti will host FC Basel in Romania. The home side has not scored a goal in either of its previous two matches and will have its hands full against a Basel outfit that already defeated Chelsea in Champions League play earlier this year.

Barcelona is in control of Group H and has not conceded a goal in either of their two Champions League wins this year, but Milan will host the La Liga giants Tuesday with a chance to pull ahead of the Catalan club in the standings.

As reported by Reuters, both Milan striker Mario Balotelli and Barca all-world forward Lionel Messi are expected to be fit for the match.

Talk about fireworks.

The other match in Group H will be between the two current basement dwellers—Ajax Amsterdam and Celtic. As noted by UEFA.com's Emmanuelle Hingant in his preview for the match, both clubs need a win to stay in sight of Barcelona and keep hope of moving on alive.

Atletico Madrid shouldn't have much trouble staying atop Group G after facing Austria Wien, while FC Porto will gear up for an important home showdown with Zenit St. Petersburg. With an upset win, Porto could move into second place in the group table.

And finally, Marseille and Napoli will square off in a battle that could either muddy up the Group F table or make things much clearer. A Napoli win would drop Marseille to 0-0-3 in Champions League play and virtually eliminate them from the knockout round.

An upset would give all four teams in the pool at least three points, making the second-leg matches that much more exciting for fans of all ages.

You can never really tell what's going to happen in the Champions League, which is exactly why you should be paying attention to Tuesday's matches with great intrigue.
