Andres Iniesta Says He Is Confident He Will Sign New Contract at Barcelona

Christopher AtkinsJun 1, 2018

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has told Cadena Ser's El Larguero radio programme he is not worried about his ongoing contract negotiations, insisting he expects to sign a new deal.

Per ESPNFC's Dermot Corrigan, Iniesta told the show money is not in his thinking when it comes to renewing, but rather that he would need to feel comfortable at the club.

Iniesta told the radio show:

"

The renewal is not something which concerns me from day to day. I do not care about being in second, third, or fourth place at Barca. I just want to feel the same from the club’s side, as what I feel for Barca.

There are other things more important than money. If I had the intention to leave I would let my contract run down, but I do not want that. When the moment to renew arrives, it will arrive.

If two people want to understand each other there is no problem. I do not like to call it "negotiations"; Barca is my family. You never sort these things out in just two months.

"

The Spain international has played for Barcelona since arriving at the club as a 12-year-old from Albacete in 1996, per FIFA.com.

Over the course of his first-team career with the Blaugrana, he has won nearly every major trophy in the game as Barcelona became one of the dominant forces of European football.

Corrigan reports Barcelona officials are willing to make Iniesta their second-highest-paid player behind Lionel Messi when a renewal does come, but there is reported interest in his signature from the English Premier League.

The player himself, though, insists the delays are not a matter of money and that a deal with the club he calls "family" will eventually be signed.

Per Goal.com's Miles Chambers, Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has also spoken to Cadena Ser over recent days regarding the club's diminutive playmaker.

Rosell insists Iniesta will stay at the club, stating his belief that the Barca No. 8 will end his career at the Camp Nou.

Described by new manager Tata Martino as "an emblem of Barcelona", per Goal.com's Joe Wright, Iniesta is yet to hit top form this campaign as Cesc Fabregas, Neymar and Messi carry the burden further up the pitch.

However, last season he provided a phenomenal 16 league assists for the Catalan side en route to their La Liga title success per Whoscored and, at 29, should have a few more years at the top of his game to offer.

With Xavi now beginning to be eased into a bit-part role, as Fabregas assumes a regular midfield berth, Iniesta's input will be more crucial than ever.
