Presidents Cup Singles Matches We Want to See

The Presidents Cup is winding down at Muirfield Village. Team USA has a commanding six point lead and should win its eighth Presidents Cup.

The last session on Sunday will feature 12 singles matches. Both teams have major winners, World Golf Hall of Fame members and surprising rookie stars.

Here is a listing of three singles matches that would be interesting for golf fans.

Tiger Woods versus Adam Scott

Tiger Woods has been playing very solid golf through the first three days of the Presidents Cup. He has teamed with Matt Kuchar to go 3-0 through the first three sessions for the American team.

Adam Scott has been one of the leaders for the International team with his young partner Hideki Matsuyama.

Woods' ex-caddie Steve Williams now totes the bag for Scott, and there are still strong feelings between the two.

Scott attended UNLV and was tutored by Butch Harmon, who formerly coached Tiger Woods. Scott’s swing today is a carbon copy of the Tiger of old, before Hank Haney and Sean Foley.

Woods has 14 major titles, but he has not won a major since 2008. Scott won his first major title at the 2013 Masters and added a win at The Barclays in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Woods had five wins in 2013, was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year, and won his ninth Vardon Trophy.

Woods is ranked No. 1 spot on the Official World Golf Rankings—and Adam Scott is No. 2.

Phil Mickelson versus Ernie Els

Phil Mickelson had one of his best years in 2013 with a win in the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Open Championship. He also won the European Tour’s Scottish Open.

Mickelson has played in every Presidents Cup since it began in 1992, and Els has been involved in eight of the nine previous President Cup competitions.

Ernie Els won the 2012 Open Championship and is the undeniable leader of the International team. Although he is ranked No. 23 in the world, Els is still considered one of the best players in golf.

A singles match featuring Els versus Mickelson would pit two Hall of Fame members playing the game at the highest level against each other.

Jordan Spieth versus Hideki Matsuyama

Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama are rookies. Not only are they new to Presidents Cup competition, but both turned professional this year.

Matsuyama is 21 years old, won three events on the Japan Golf tour this season, and played well in the majors. He finished tied for 10th at the U.S. Open, tied for sixth at the Open Championship and tied for 19th in the PGA Championship.

He will join the PGA Tour next year and play a full schedule in the United States.

Spieth’s rise up the PGA Tour ranks has been well documented. At just 20 years old, he has become one of the most recognizable players on tour.

A win at the John Deere Classic, nine top-10 finishes, and a runner-up finish at the Tour Championship have given him one of the best rookie seasons in the history of the PGA Tour.

Spieth and Matsuyama are two young players we could be watching for many years to come.
