10 Classic Liverpool Away Kits

Mark JonesOct 4, 2013

Last Sunday saw the competitive debut of Liverpool's distinctive third kit for the 2013/14 season, and whilst it might not be to everyone's taste, it at least delivered on the pitch as the Reds―or should that be the Black, White and Purples―won 3-1 at Sunderland.

It is certainly an interesting addition to the roster of change strips that Liverpool have worn over the years, but which are the ones that stand out for you?

Here we've compiled 10 of the more memorable away kits that the men from Anfield have ever donned on the road:

1979-82: White Shirt, Red V-Neck, Black Shorts, White Socks

1 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Howard Gayle

The game that made it famous: Bayern Munich 1 Liverpool 1, April 22nd 1981

The staple of Liverpool away kits over the years, the white shirt and black shorts have long been sported by the Reds on the roads all over the continent.

This distinctive red v-neck was worn in Bayern Munich's Olympic Stadium in the European Cup semi-final of 1981, when unheralded substitute Howard Gayle came on early for the injured Kenny Dalglish and ran the home defence ragged on the way to Liverpool's away goals victory.

1982-84: Yellow Shirt, Red V-Neck and Pinstripes, Yellow Shorts and Socks

2 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Kenny Dalglish

The game that made it famous: Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2, September 10th 1983

After wearing yellow for the first time in a European Cup tie against Ajax in 1966, Liverpool brought it back in the late 70s and early 80s, with this pinstripe number perhaps the best of the bunch.

Dalglish scored a fine goal in a win at Arsenal early in the 1983/84 season wearing the kit, which would help inspire the Reds to their fourth European Cup at the end of the season.

1987-89: Grey/Silver Shirt, Red Trim, Grey/Silver Shorts and Socks

3 of 10

Player it makes you think of: John Barnes

The game that made it famous: Pretty much the entire 1987/88 season

The Liverpool team of 1987/88 is regarded by many as one of the club's best of all time, and they shimmered in this silver shirt which seemed to make them shine.

The club's shirt sponsor changed from Crown Paints to Candy in 1988 but the shirt remained, and it is something of a retro fashion item these days.

1995/96: Green and White Quartered Shirt, Green Shorts, White Socks

4 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Steve McManaman

The game that made it famous: Manchester United 1 Liverpool 0, May 11th 1996

When Liverpool took off their white suits in the 1996 FA Cup final they slipped into this quartered shirt which perhaps looks better on reflection.

Also worn in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford which marked Eric Cantona's comeback and the cup semi-final win over Aston Villa, this shirt will forever be associated with the Wembley defeat to United and Cantona's late winner.

1996/97: Ecru Shirt, Black Shorts, Ecru Socks

5 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Robbie Fowler

The game that made it famous: Brann Bergen 1 Liverpool 1 (Fowler's great goal), March 6th 1997

Liverpool's switch to Reebok in 1996 saw a new colour enter plenty of supporters' vocabularies, as ecru became all the rage on the Reds' travels.

Perhaps the away kit was best remembered for Robbie Fowler's stunning goal against the Norwegian club Brann Bergen in the Cup Winners' Cup of that season, ensuring that the kit wasn't the only thing to stick in the memory.

2000/01: Yellow/Gold Shirt, Navy Blue Trim, Shorts and Socks

6 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Michael Owen

The game that made it famous: Arsenal 1 Liverpool 2, May 12th 2001

For a long time it looked as though yellow and navy ribbons wouldn't need to be attached to the FA Cup in the final of 2001, and then Michael Owen struck twice to break Arsenal hearts.

The forward also scored twice in a win at Roma in this kit, as Liverpool strode towards success in three cup competitions in the 2000/01 season.

2004/05: Yellow Shirt, Black Trim, Black Shorts, Yellow Socks

7 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Luis Garcia

The game that made it famous: Bayer Leverkusen 1 Liverpool 3 (when the change yellow shorts were worn, March 9th 2005)

The yellow away shirt of the 2005 European champions had a curious black mesh design attached, but that didn't stop Liverpool from being successful when they wore it.

Luis Garcia scored twice as the Reds saw off Bayer Leverkusen in Germany to reach the quarter-finals of a tournament they would go on to make their own.

2006/07: White Shirt, Green Trim, White Shorts and Socks

8 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Craig Bellamy

The game that made it famous: Barcelona 1 Liverpool 2, February 21st 2007

This kit was rarely seen, but when it was it proved to be a lucky charm.

Wearing one white and one green sleeve, Liverpool pitched up at the Nou Camp in February 2007 and came from a goal down to beat Barcelona 2-1 in a match famed for Craig Bellamy's golf club celebration and his course partner John Arne Riise's winner with his right foot.

2007/08: Black Shirt, Red/White Trim, Black Shorts and Socks

9 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Dirk Kuyt

The game that made it famous: Marseille 0 Liverpool 4, December 11th 2007

A stylish kit based on the adidas designs of this time, this shirt was seen across the continent as the Reds reached their third Champions League semi-final in four seasons.

Its finest hour came in southern France, where a Liverpool side needing a win to avoid elimination from the Champions League group stage hammered Marseille 4-0 to become the first English team to win there.

2008/09: Grey/Silver Shirt, Red Trim, Grey/Silver Shorts and Socks

10 of 10

Player it makes you think of: Fernando Torres

The game that made it famous: Manchester United 1 Liverpool 4, March 14th 2009

A riff on the classic late 80s design, this number was a slow burner until the Reds started to perform better and better in it.

Forever associated with the 4-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in the 2008/09 season, the Reds ended up just four points off making this the shirt of the champions.
