The Things Mario Balotelli Must Do to Win the Ballon d'Or
The young 23-year-old Italian striker Mario Balotelli has all the tools to go ahead and win the Ballon d'Or. It is not his physical or technical ability which limits him, but rather a fixable mental offense.
Balotelli isn't malicious, or stupid. His upbringing became a tale of two lives—his love for the Balotelli family who adopted and raised young Mario in Brescia, and the struggle with his biological parents who he shunned from his life.
It's this very confusion which has led to his convoluted personality. Here's the documentary which explains his upbringing very well:
On paper, Mario Balotelli's impact with Milan seems phenomenal. 15 goals scored in 17 domestic matches, including a stretch of seven months where the Rossoneri did not lose a game with Super Mario starting from the first minute.
His mixture of athleticism, physicality and pure technique makes him one of the biggest threats in world football. Perhaps the most underrated part of Balotelli's game is his creative ability.
With his back to defend, he can hold up the ball like a typical No. 9 and deliver a surgical pass to a streaking winger or midfielder.
Balotelli's finishing ability is perhaps what sets him apart from the competition. His signature goal is usually a stunning curl into a top corner, where he bends the ball almost impossibly with impeccable finesse.
His aerial game can still be developed but the main setback he has is the occasional temper tantrum. Against Napoli, he had his best game as a professional until the last whistle where he immaturely approached the referee, hurling insults and showcasing his petulance.
A three-match ban was handed out to him, a ban which Milan refuse to appeal for ethical reasons, according to Rossoneriblog. Balotelli will now miss the most pivotal match of the first half of the season against Juventus, leaving Massimiliano Allegri's team in a very unfortunate situation.
While his immature bouts are less frequent now compared to his days at Manchester City, they still tend to pop up in the most vital parts of the season. Balotelli failing to restrain himself could have very well prevented Milan any chance of getting back into the top three.
If they fail to achieve this goal at the end of the season, expect a few skeptics to point back to this Balotelli suspension as one of the causes.
Assuming he can conquer his inner demons and fix a temporary problem, Balotelli can go ahead and reach the upper echelons of Europe's finest. It would be a shame to see his innate ability go to waste, seeing as Milan had enough faith in the Italian international to give him a chance to clean his image.
