Canelo Alvarez's Inexperience Exposed by Floyd Mayweather
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez went into Saturday's bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. looking to make history and become an international superstar.
Mayweather showed him what an international superstar looks like.
Alvarez was not only defeated via majority decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but he was also embarrassed. The 23-year-old Mexican connected on just 22 percent of his punches, while Mayweather connected on 46 percent of his shots, per SHO Stats.

Before the fight, Alvarez was a "threat" to Mayweather's undefeated record. During the fight, he looked ordinary...and frustrated.
Austin Trout was the biggest opponent Alvarez had faced before Mayweather. Alvarez was plenty aware of the leap he was making from Trout to Mayweather, and he probably tirelessly prepared for it. But, in the end, he's still an up-and-coming fighter, not an unstoppable force.
He excited the crowd with big swings intended to send Mayweather to the canvas, but it wasn't long before the crowd realized he wasn't connecting. Meanwhile, Mayweather peppered him with counter punches, demonstrating how precision and accuracy can be more devastating than raw power.
Alvarez, who came into the fight confident that he would give Mayweather a battle, was understandably frustrated down the stretch. The chants for the challenger died down until there was nothing but silence. The man many hoped would give the brash Mayweather "what he deserved" became just another money-maker for the legend, another pawn in his crafty little game.
It's worth noting that Alvarez wasn't particularly accurate against Trout in April, either. He connected on just 29 percent of his punches against the 27-year-old southpaw, per CompuBox. It was a battle, which only added to the buzz surrounding the young Mexican, but it wasn't a dominant effort.
Canelo has a lot to learn. He has the potential to be great given his offensive ability, but he's going to have to work on his defensive skills and be more tactical and precise if he expects to test someone like Mayweather.
