Mayweather vs. Canelo: Alvarez Still Good Fighter Despite Loss

Tyler BrookeSep 15, 2013

Floyd "Money" Mayweather handled Saul "Canelo" Alvarez quite easily on Saturday night, but that shouldn't take away from Canelo's impressive career.

The fight went the distance and was scored as a major decision, but it should have been a unanimous decision. C.J. Ross scored the fight as a draw, at 114-114, while the other judges had it as an easy win for Money, at 117-111 and 116-112.

If Ross sounds familiar, it's because she is the same judge who had Timothy Bradley beating Manny Pacquiao last year.

It was a pretty lopsided fight, but there are some positives to take away from the fight for Canelo.

First, this was his first career loss. He is now at 42-1-1 over his career. If you're only loss is against the greatest boxer in the world, you're doing something right. Mayweather seems to look unstoppable, even at 36 years old.

Myron Medcalf of ESPN did a great job putting things into perspective in regards to just how good Money is.

As for the fight itself, there were some things to like about Canelo's game plan. The first three rounds of the fight were actually pretty close, although it did feel like Floyd had a very slight edge in them. Canelo came out and made sure to pace himself, but he also did a great job of working the body of Mayweather and was able to put some shots together.

Even when things looked bad, Canelo kept staying aggressive. There was some bruising that started forming around his left eye in the fourth round, but he kept in there, landing some shots. He was even able to crank up the intensity in the sixth round. He was actually jawing at Floyd during the round.

The seventh wasn't a good round at all for Canelo. Floyd picked him apart in the round, starting with an uppercut and then following with a number of big shots.

Right after that, Canelo came back in the eighth, stayed close to Mayweather and continued to land shots. In the 10th, he had his best shot of the night, hitting Mayweather with a big blow, while he was backed up, and it brought a loud response from the crowd.

Canelo wasn't able to make up the lost ground, however, as Floyd coasted to the finish line.

It's not like Canelo is a bad boxer by any means. He was able to go into the ring and challenge the world's best boxer, not get knocked down and keep the intensity up even after some demoralizing rounds.

Alvarez still has a number of good wins under his belt, including ones against Austin Trout and Shane Mosley. While he would have liked to get another one against Mayweather, Canelo is still a great boxer who has the chance to become one of the sport's big stars in the near future.
