Miami Hurricanes
No team was a bigger winner on Saturday than the Miami Hurricanes.
After losing six games in 2011 and five a season ago, it wasn't apparent how much Al Golden's rebuilding efforts were paying off on the gridiron. If your biggest wins at Miami in a season are against an unranked Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech, something is wrong.
But they came back in a huge way on Saturday, knocking off No. 12 Florida at home and letting the college football world know that Miami is back.
Quarterback Stephen Morris delivered a couple of strikes to put them up early, and a suffocating defense forced turnover after turnover on the Gators.
Even though a win over a cupcake school might have gotten the 'Canes into the rankings since they entered the weekend as the first team out, such a statement win over one of the SEC's elite will skyrocket them up the polls.
Projection: No. 19
Ole Miss Rebels
Ole Miss started off the season with an impressive win in a SEC shootout over Vanderbilt, and they continued rolling with a 31-13 victory over Southeast Missouri State on Saturday afternoon.
The Rebels hung up all of their 31 points in the first half and shut out the Redhawks heading into the halftime break. It wasn't until the second half that their opponent had any sort of offensive success, albeit against many of the Rebels' reserves.
Quarterback Bo Wallace isn't always on, but he does a masterful job of running their offense and sticking to the game plan. He was an efficient 8-of-15 passing for 188 yards and two touchdowns, earning a headset and a trip to the sidelines for the whole second half.
With a road trip to No. 15 Texas—who got run over by BYU—looming, the Rebels look more and more like a team that will give the Longhorns fits. Ole Miss is one of those teams on an upward trend in the SEC, and it's starting to feel like that transformation could come sooner rather than later.
Projection: No. 24
Arizona State Sun Devils
Arizona State got their season off to a late start with Saturday as their season opener, but they took care of business in a 55-0 drubbing of Sacramento State.
Sure, the FCS opponent isn't quite a marquee victory, but Sacramento State won their last two games against Pac-12 teams—Oregon State in 2011 and Colorado last year—and the Beavers' loss to Eastern Washington last weekend showed anything is possible.
The Sun Devils completely stomped on the Hornets, out-gaining them 523-167 with the first-team offense hanging a 42-point lead on them to enter the halftime break.
Junior quarterback Taylor Kelly shined on Saturday with 300 yards on 23-of-31 passing with five touchdowns. He was constantly in control of an offense that notched 27 first downs on the game.
After being just three spots out of the top 25 in last week's poll, this impressive opening victory should help the Sun Devils slide into one of the final spots in next week's rankings.
Projection: No. 25
