5 England Players Who May Have Played Their Last ODI
England have named a fresh-faced squad for the ODI series against Australia and the names that are not included, with major players being rested, are as interesting as those who are.
Whilst the presence of Jamie Overton, Michael Carberry and others is intriguing, so too is the absence of Samit Patel, Jade Dernbach and more.
Begin the slideshow to see who Bleacher Report have selected as five players who may have played their last ODI.
Samit Patel
1 of 5The rotund all-rounder last played for England in ODI cricket in January against India. However, he has since been shafted from the squad. Even with large scale rotation at the end of this summer, Patel has failed to find a place in England's 15-man squad.
Patel has been far from a disappointment in England colours thus far. Although his statistics are not overly impressive, he's been a consistent and reliable performer and his all-round qualities offer precious balance to the team.
His efforts in the World T20 in Sri Lanka last October demonstrated his qualities. However, while he may yet sneak back into the T20 team—with the World T20 being in Bangladesh—his chances of finding a way back into the 50-over team are not healthy at this point in time.
Especially with a World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Craig Kieswetter
2 of 5The Somerset keeper has seemingly been replaced by Jos Buttler for the foreseeable future.
When he was dropped in January, Kieswetter was told to score runs in county cricket to warrant a return to the side. This season, he has done just that, averaging 65 in this year’s YB40.
Buttler has suggested potential without quite fulfilling it. He’s a bad series away from being dropped. All Kieswetter can do is continue scoring runs and hope he’s the man they call on if and when someone is needed.
Matt Prior
3 of 5Many people find it a mystery why Matt Prior does not play ODI cricket for England. He’s an attacking, instinctive and highly successful Test keeper and has been for some time. So, while England have struggled to plug that very gap in 50-over cricket, it does seem remarkable that he hasn’t been given an extended run.
Indeed, Prior has been tried in 50-over cricket by England in a number of different roles and positions, and he's struggled to make an impact. What’s more, Prior is such a valuable member of the Test team that keeping him fit for the longest format is a priority, and the England selectors clearly see no reason to risk him in the coloured clothing.
Jade Dernbach
4 of 5England’s heavily inked fast bowler is an enigma of a cricketer. At times, he’s unplayable and frugal. At other times, he’s cannon fodder and frivolous.
In T20 cricket, he remains effective, and he only recently succeeded against Australia. However, his economy rate of 6.35 in ODI cricket is eye-watering for a specialist fast bowler and his non-selection for the almost second-string squad to play Australia is indicative of his slide in this format.
However, Dernbach is only 27 and injuries and form can change situations very quickly. He’ll probably play again, but it would certainly not be a surprise were he not to.
Graeme Swann
5 of 5This is highly unlikely. Swann will probably play for England again in limited-overs cricket. However, rumours have began to circulate that he is considering retiring after the Ashes this winter. Having expressed such endearment to that format and with a prolonged period before the next clash, it would make sense in that regard.
However, Swann is still performing at an extraordinary level and a retirement would be seen as premature. So, it's unlikely, but not impossible.
