Harry Wilson's Liverpool Tour Diary, Day 5: Last-Gasp Winner Sets Up Final
Liverpool winger Harry Wilson was signed by the club as an eight-year-old. Now 16 and part of Liverpool's Under-18 setup, Wilson will be producing a daily diary for Bleacher Report during their trip to New York for the Newark International Soccer Classic.
We've just come off the pitch and are absolutely ecstatic to have beaten Maccabi Haifa of Israel 2-1 to reach the final of the tournament. It was a very, very tough game, and they made it very difficult for us in the second half.
I scored early to put us ahead—taking advantage of their high line to run in behind and set up a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. I was trying to slot it to the side of him, but it went through his legs and we had the lead.
We controlled the first half, but in the second half they got stronger.
They are a big, physical side, and a lot of their players are older than ours. They were quick on the press, and the heat made it hard for us to deal with them. They equalised, but we stole an injury-time winner through Adam Phillips to send us into the final.
The mood in the dressing room right now is brilliant. I know our coach tells Brendan Rodgers how we're getting on, so I'm sure he'll let him know we've made the final. We'll play either QPR or Inter Milan on Saturday evening.
We're heading for a recovery session in the pool now, then we'll have some dinner and be sure to get to bed for about 10 o'clock. We'll need our rest to be ready for the final.
It's been amazing to hear the Liverpool fans in the crowd cheering us on. We've also had tons of messages of support on Twitter. It means a lot to know the supporters are behind us.
An enriching experience
We were all really excited to be told we'd be coming to New York with Liverpool. It's been a great trip, not just for the football, but for the life experiences we've been given here.
We've managed to see some of the sights, and going to Ground Zero yesterday was something we'll never forget.
