Let the Good Times Faux: The Outline for a Doug Pederson Feature

Tony MarquisMay 14, 2009

In 2004, Doug Pederson retired from the NFL as quietly as he came into the league. For most of his career, he was the backup to Brett Favre, while Favre was setting a record for starting 275 consecutive games—the longest streak for a quarterback.

Pederson did start nine games for the Eagles in 1999, buying time before a rookie out of Syracuse took over. He spent a season with the Cleveland Browns ushering in Tim Couch, then returned to Green Bay and never started another game.

After retiring due to an injury, Pederson took a job coaching prep football at Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport, La. where he led the team to the state semifinals twice.
In January, Pederson was hired by Reid to be an offensive quality control coach.

For Pederson:

Did Reid contact you about the position or did you call him?

Offensive quality control coach, what the heck is that? (Duties, typical day?)

What was the injury that made you retire?

Why coaching? And high school? And why in Shreveport?

How did you get from Bellingham, Wash., to Northeast Louisiana University (Now Louisiana-Monroe)?

What was the state of the Calvary Baptist program when you got there?

Was it a difficult decision to leave?

What was it like being the backup to Favre, who almost never left the game?

How did you occupy your time on the sidelines? Did that experience help you as a coach?

For Andy Reid:

How far back do you and Doug go?

Why did you sign him in '99? To help Donovan McNabb along?

Did he have a reputation as a player-coach then?

Will he work with the quarterbacks? (Probably get this from Pederson, but Reid can expand on it.)

For McNabb:

What do you remember about Pederson your rookie year?

How much did he help you?

Have you had a chance to catch up with him?

For Calvary Baptist AD (it was Johnny Booty while he was there, possibly Rod Chandler now) verify team's record and state semifinal games:

Were you surprised that Pederson was interested in the coaching job? Did you know about him?

Program was only a year old when you hired Pederson? Were you amazed at results?

For Khiry Cooper, Nebraska University receiver and Calvary Baptist alum:

You were drafted by the Angels, was it a hard decision to pass up a signing bonus and go to Nebraska? And to stick with football?

Did you talk with coach Pederson about your decision?

How did he help you with football?

Note: I'd most like to know what drove Pederson into coaching–and in Louisiana. (I know Shreveport is in Northern Louisiana, but did Katrina have anything to do with his homecoming?).

If there were others mentioned while talking to Pederson, I'd make an effort to call them too. Obviously, I'd ask more questions, but this would be my outline for a feature.
