Liverpool Transfer News: Failed Willian Bid Means Luis Suarez Should Be Staying
All summer long, Liverpool have been confident that Luis Suarez would be staying. For the first time, everyone else should be as well.
The first good news happened when Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted defeat in his pursuit to acquire the striker. According to David Hytner of The Guardian, he was asked about making another bid for Suarez and responded by saying, "There is absolutely no chance of that."
Arsenal had been one of the biggest suitors for the talented player throughout the transfer window, making an official bid as high as £40,000,001. The fact that the fellow Premier League club dropped out of the race is only good news for Liverpool.
Of course, there have been other clubs across Europe trying to add offense through Suarez.
Fortunately, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had a perfectly reasonable reaction to that recently, according to Andy Hunter of The Guardian:
"It's very difficult at this time [for a Suárez bid to succeed]. We are trying to get one or two more quality players in through the door. If we lose Luis at this stage, it would be difficult to replace him. There might have been a point a few months ago where there was time to do it, but with 11 days to go, it would be difficult to replace him.
"
While Rodgers has continually stated that his best player was not going anywhere, most statements came across as begging him to stay. However, this change of pace is based on the latest news in the transfer window.
Liverpool did not want to give up Suarez without having someone with the ability to replace him on the attack. They thought they had found a quality replacement in Willian, although the Brazilian player moved onto Tottenham and then to Chelsea, where it appears he will end up, according to David Ornstein of BBC Sport.
This leaves the Reds with no legitimate options to fill in for a player who finished second in the EPL last season with 23 goals.
If management were hesitant to sell the Uruguayan star early in the summer, the lack of incoming transfers should make the chances of a move become even less likely.
Despite his issues, keeping Suarez is a good thing for Liverpool. He is an elite scorer who can create his own opportunities on a regular basis. He was also a major reason that the club was able to finish fourth in the EPL in goals scored last season.
He is still serving out a suspension from last season, but he will once again showcase his elite ability when he returns to the squad. Putting him alongside an improving Daniel Sturridge will give the Reds one of the most feared attacks in the league.
Fans might have wanted to add Willian, but Suarez is the type of player who can bring Liverpool to a top-four finish. It seems as though missing out on the Anzhi Makhachkala will end up being a blessing in disguise.
Until the transfer window ends, supporters should stay alert for any possible sale. However, all indication seems to be that Suarez will still be at Anfield in September.
This could lead to great things for the historic club.
