Manchester United Transfer News: David Moyes' Latest Transfer Comments Are Bold
As defending Premier League champions, Manchester United has earned the right to approach the summer transfer window with patience.
A year after the Red Devils made a massive summer splash by acquiring Robin van Persie from Arsenal, the club has been flying under the radar, targeting midfield talents like Cesc Fabregas and Marouane Fellaini but failing to land anyone significant with less than two weeks remaining before the transfer window closes.
United did usher in a new era this offseason, bringing in former Everton manager David Moyes to replace Sir Alex Ferguson.
And the new boss responded with the following comments when asked about the possibility of landing new names before the summer transfer window closes on Sept. 2, per Manchester United's official website:
"There is a need to do it. But there is no pressure to do it.
We've been talking about it since I took the job on 1 July. I have an idea of where I'd like to strengthen and what we need to do. But we won't do it because people like you tell us we should be signing players. We'll do it because we think it's the right thing to do. If the right players are available then great, but, if not, the first thing we'll do is encourage our own young players in the squad to do as well as they did last year.
There is a possibility [we won't sign anybody] but the plan is we bring in one or two if we can. I think there is [value out there] but we have only targeted certain players and don't have a big, big list. There are only certain quality players we want to bring to the club.
"
Though bold, Moyes' remarks are totally in bounds despite the fact that he's yet to win a title during his brief time at Old Trafford. Anyone who disagrees should just go back and watch the tape of United's 4-1 thrashing of Swansea City in their Premier League opener.
Sure, the Red Devils are set to face a much stiffer test against Chelsea on Monday, but for now there's no denying that Moyes is onto something by displaying confidence in the prospect of moving forward with the squad he has.
The club would be silly to add players for the sake of pleasing supporters, especially when they are coming off a season in which they beat 19 other clubs for the Premier League championship, finishing 11 points ahead of second-place Manchester City and scoring more league goals (86) than any other team.
Not to mention the Red Devils still possess the EPL's leading goalscorer in Van Persie, who netted 26 goals in 2012-13.
United's Champions League run came to an end earlier than expected last season, but their 3-2 loss to Real Madrid on aggregate doesn't suggest they need a lineup overhaul in order to improve upon their finish in 2013-14.
Possibly adding Fellaini or another quality midfielder before the deadline would make an already dangerous United squad that much better.
Consequently, Moyes' latest transfer comments are bold, but also fair given that his new club has reached the Champions League final three times in the past six years and is currently seated comfortably atop the Premier League throne.
