Late Deals Manchester City Fans Would Love to See Happen
The transfer window slams shut in less than three weeks, and City have already got the majority of their spending done. However, here’s my list of whom they should consider signing in what time is left.
Only the arrival of a new centre-back to give them more options and a left-back to replace Aleksandar Kolarov is imperative, but I’ve thrown in another for good measure.
Pepe
City undoubtedly need a centre-back, and Real Madrid’s Pepe is very possibly available. He has loads of Champions League experience and international caps and would find it easy to fit into City’s side—he’s an excellent defender.
At 30 years old, his very best days are arguably behind him. But there are many of examples of centre-halves who play brilliantly well into their 30s. He could potentially give City two or three years of very good service.
Price is the problem, though, with Real reportedly looking for £30 million, according to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail. City would be daft to go that high. But with the Spanish side desperate to sign Gareth Bale for what would an enormous fee, there’s some negotiating to be done here.
Fabio Coentrao
Aleksandar Kolarov is supposedly being courted by Italian side Juventus, with The Old Lady said to be prepared to pay in the region of €12 million, according to Cheshire Today. It would be an excellent deal for City. Kolarov has rarely looked anywhere near a top player during stint at the Etihad, and a move makes sense for both the player and the club.
A replacement would be needed, and who better to fight it out with Gael Clichy for the left-back spot than Real’s Fabio Coentrao? A brilliant player during his time at Benfica, he’s no longer a first-team regular at the Bernabeu.
Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has hinted that Coentrao could be available, reports Rob Kearsey of CaughtOffside. If he’s prepared to battle for his place in the side, he’d be a superb acquisition.
Sandro
Okay, City signed Fernandinho and don’t need defensive midfield reinforcements, but I’m indulging my desires here, and this guy is superb. Before his injury last season, he was sure to be named in the Premier League Team of the Year. At 24 years old, he’s an incredible footballer.
Very few players can match Sandro’s energy and industry, and he’s also a brilliant distributor of the ball. He’s big, strong, physically imposing and never pulls out of a challenge. There’s so much to admire about his game. He could play for any side in the world.
With him and Pablo Zabaleta in the same team, City would have the two most committed players in the Premier League. City fans who pine for the return of Nigel De Jong should watch this guy play. He has everything the Dutchman offers and more.
