Tottenham Transfer Rumours: Latest Buzz on Marc Bartra and Troy Deeney
Understandably, almost all of the attention this summer transfer window for Tottenham has centered around the possible move of star Gareth Bale.
However, while this occupies the minds of the media and transfer junkies, there is more going on for Spurs.
Marc Bartra and Troy Deeney have been mentioned as targets of Tottenham. I'm not fully convinced either of these moves will happen, but they are certainly worth discussing.
Marc Bartra
Marc Bartra is a natural transfer target. The talented 22-year-old can't seem to crack the Barcelona lineup, and he needs regular playing time to fulfill his immense potential.
The central defender made just eight appearances for Barcelona in La Liga play last year.
So, the Goal.com report indicating Bartra is a loan target for Valencia and Villarreal is no surprise. On top of that, they mention that "Tottenham have made an approach" about Bartra, and that he is "keen on a move to" Tottenham.
There has been friction between the club and the player in the past, but Bartra has never voiced his displeasure. However, Duncan Castles of Goal.com passed along an unhappy quote made last year by Bartra's agent after Alex Song got the nod at central defender for Barcelona over Bartra: "Bartra is 25,000 times better than Song as a central defender."
So, this move would be a slam dunk were it not for one little detail.
As the report astutely points out, Barca is swinging and missing on central defenders in the transfer market. Obviously, until they do secure a centre-back, there will be hesitancy over dealing Bartra.
With Barcelona's continued frustration in the transfer market, it is hard to see them parting ways with Bartra.
Troy Deeney
Now we get to the curious case of Troy Deeney. According to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, Spurs have interest in Watford striker Troy Deeney.
Deeney's name is always going to strike a bit of controversy.
Last year, as the Daily Mail recounts, Deeney spent three months, of a 10-month sentence, in prison after being convicted of affray. Red flags don't get much more red than this.
There is also the fact that, last March, he signed on for three-and-a-half more years at Watford.
Of course, the reason that clubs would be able to look past this is due to Deeney's talent. He is only 25, and he has a nice blend of size and speed.
He scored 20 goals in English League Championship play last year, and he already has four goals in two games this summer.
Still, it would be a gamble to add Deeney.
