England vs. Australia Ashes Cricket 2013: Bold Predictions for Fourth Test

Joe StrangeAug 11, 2013

England may have already retained the famous urn but they are still determined to win the Ashes series outright by clinching victory in the fourth Test.

A disappointing first innings saw them bowled out for just 238 runs.

However, thanks largely to Ian Bell's third century of the series so far, England have hauled themselves back in with a chance of victory at Chester-le-Street and could have things wrapped up tomorrow.

Monday is the fourth day of the fourth Test, with the hosts currently sitting on a second-innings score of 235 for 5 after 74 overs.

Bell, buoyed by his 105 runs, is still at the crease alongside Tim Bresnan. Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann and James Anderson are still left as England's batting order approaches its latter stages.

Australia will be looking to bounce back after losing some of the control they showed during the opening two days of the Test.

All out for 270 in their first innings, the visitors now find themselves down by 202 runs but with their second innings still to come.

So what will happen in the remaining two days of the fourth Ashes Test? Will England continue their winning ways, or will the Aussies fight back?

Here's some bold predictions for the final two days at Chester-le-Street.

England Will Score Almost 400 in Their Second Innings

In theory, England's run-scoring potential should dwindle the further down the batting order they progress.

However, with the in-form Bell still at the crease, there's every chance he could continue to improve on his current 105 score.

The remaining batsmen are predominantly bowlers and a wicketkeeper, but they've shown themselves to be more than capable when facing the Australian bowling attack.

The players will be acutely aware that if they can avoid being bowled out for a few hours and add some more runs, the Aussies will have a hard job catching them.

Australia Will Be Bowled out on the Final Day

If England do post a total just below 400, that will leave them with a lead of around 350 over Australia.

While this wouldn't be unachievable with the likes of Chris Rogers and David Warner on form, the visitors could struggle to achieve such a target if England can eat a few hours into the fourth day.

This would leave them needing to play an attacking game tomorrow in order to win the Test and have a chance of drawing the series.

England's bowlers will relish playing against a less inhibited batting order and will take advantage by bowling them out before the end of the fifth day.

Graeme Swann Will Be the Key Man

Graeme Swann has showed some of his best form at times during this Ashes series and he can do the same again when Australia come in to bat.

The England spinner will be facing opposition who are desperate to get runs on the board and avoid the draw, which would come as a result of not beating the score of Andy Flower's men.

Swann can continue to add more wickets to his ever-increasing list by playing an instrumental role in bowling the Aussies out and sealing victory for his country.
