PGA Championship 2013: Day 4 Leaderboard Analysis, Highlights and More

Joseph ZuckerJun 3, 2018

It didn't look like it when his final putt went in, but Jason Dufner took home his first major title after winning the 2013 PGA Championship.

This is beginning to be a bit of a trend in regard to golfers winning majors for the first time (h/t ESPN Stats and Info).

According to ESPN's John Buccigross, it's becoming harder and harder to predict the winners of a major tournament.

It's a deserved win for the 36-year-old. He almost broke the record for lowest score in a major tournament round when he shot a seven-under 63 in Round 2. Despite a one-over 71 on Saturday, Dufner stayed near the top, and he made his final move on Sunday.

The final day was altogether anticlimactic.

Dufner was in second place coming into Sunday, and he left in the top spot. Once he got back to the top of the leaderboard, he didn't give it up.

Auburn fans celebrated the former Tiger winning the only way they knew how, throwing toilet paper at Toomer's Corner, via Brandon Marcello of AL.com.

Jim Furyk was the only guy who could have realistically challenged Dufner on the back nine, but he didn't have anywhere near enough to put up a legitimate fight. The end of the tournament turned into nothing more than a coronation for Dufner.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, as it's great to see a golfer get to relish in his success on the course like Dufner did.

Furyk finished second after a lackluster final round. He had finished under par in each of his first three rounds. However, in what would be the most pivotal of the tournament, Furyk came up short and only finished at even par.

Behind him, you had a lot of golfers who didn't figure much in the final result. Jonas Blixt, Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson all had average days and never found themselves outside shouting distance of Dufner.

Here's a look at the leaderboard and some of the compelling storylines from Sunday's play.

The Closing of Jason Dufner

A win at the PGA Championship is sweet for Jason Dufner. It was at this tournament two years ago that he bogeyed the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to watch a five-stroke lead evaporate in the final round. He ended up losing a playoff to Keegan Bradley that year.

You can't overstate just how phenomenal Dufner was in this tournament.

He tied the record for lowest score in a major with his 63 in the second round. Rather than letting that get to his head, Dufner continued to get his head down and focused on the task at hand.

Speaking of putting his head down, it seems Dufner may have just spawned the next fad among fans: Dufnering (h/t Louisville Courier-Journal's Adam Himmelsbach).

Time and again, the 36-year-old hit the right shots and avoided any major mistakes. He started strong, with three birdies on the back nine, and that helped to ease some of the stress going into the final stretch. By then, he had built a nice lead and was just battling against himself.

He made it a little scary on the final hole, but it would have taken a monumental collapse for Dufner to have lost the tournament. Instead, he was more than up for it, and he did just enough to get the win.

Moving Up the Leaderboard

Even if you don't have any chance of winning going into the final day, you might as well do your best to get as much of the purse as you can.

One of the golfers who really helped himself financially was Scott Piercy, who had the lowest round of the day. With his five-under 65, he jumped quite a few places up the leaderboard. He finished five under for the tournament. His Sunday performance wasn't anywhere near enough to contend for the lead, but Piercy will have done himself a lot of favors with his strong play.

Graeme McDowell, Hideki Matsuyama and Keegan Bradley all finished at four under for the round. McDowell jumped 21 spots as he went from two over to two under in the space of 18 holes. Matsuyama and Bradley finished with identical four-round scores, as they each ended at one over.

Tiger Watch: Round 4

Tiger Woods will be happy to see the last of Oak Hill for the time being. With his even-par 70 in the fourth round, he's now gone eight rounds at the course without breaking par (h/t ESPN Stats and Info).

Tiger came on strong on the back nine, but it wasn't enough to erase his bogey and double bogey on Nos. 8 and 9 respectively.

Overall, it was a forgettable tournament for Woods. You saw some flashes that made you think he can possibly catch Jack Nicklaus. For the most part, though, Woods' putting really let him down, and it's difficult to believe he'll ever reach that immortal 19th major.

ESPN golf researcher Justin Ray illustrated just how tough it's going to be for Tiger.

Highlights

It only took a tap-in for Jason Dufner to win the 2013 PGA Championship

After sputtering a bit on No. 18, Dufner righted the ship with this chip onto the green.

Dufner all but shut the door on Jim Furyk with this approach shot on 16.

Although he finished five shots back of Dufner, Adam Scott can certainly be proud of this chip on No. 18

Dufner will look to retain his title next year at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.
