Borussia Dortmund: Was Aubameyang's Debut the Greatest of All Time?
Somehow, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's talent went unnoticed in England this summer. His quick pace and eye for goal led Loire club Saint-Etienne to a cup victory last season, and for long stretches, they looked to challenge for a Champions League position.
The EPL's loss is Dortmund's gain, however, as the pacey forward managed what has to be one of the all-time greatest debuts, scoring a hat trick in his first competitive match in the Bundesliga.
His pace and composure were central to all three goals, as he regularly beat his marker to long balls and kept cool enough to slot shots past even an onrushing goalkeeper. And had it not been for at least one great save, Aubameyang could have made it four.
As if that weren't enough, Dortmund managed a clean sheet—this was a thoroughly dominant display due in large part to the performance of a Bundesliga debutant.
Quite recently, Sergio Aguero of Manchester City and Michu of Swansea scored braces on their respective debuts, but Aubameyang has done them one better.
Going back a little further, there have been other spectacular debuts, such as Vedad Ibišević's brace for 1899 Hoffenheim in 2008.
Even further still are names like Jurgen Klinsmann and Stan Collymore, who scored important goals in thrilling matches during their debuts at Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, respectively.
Commenter Mark Hanna reminds us of Fabrizio Ravanelli's 1996 debut performance for Middlesbrough, where he also scored a hat trick en route to a 3-3 draw against Liverpool.
So the question I pose is this: Has anyone ever had such a debut? And not just a league debut, but a performance that contributed to such a dominant team display?
I've found quite a few braces over the years—and one hat trick thus far—but a hat trick en route to a 4-0 demolition? Does it get better than this?
