2013 PGA Championship Leaderboard Is Packed with Star Power

Fred AltvaterJun 8, 2018

Although Tiger, Phil and Rory are nowhere to be seen at the top of the PGA Championship leaderboard, there is plenty of star power to fill any void they might leave.

Jason Dufner shot a brilliant seven-under par 63 on Friday to tie the major championship low-round record. His second round included an eagle two at the par-4 second hole at Oak Hill.

He flew his approach shot from the fairway well past the hole, but the back spin drew his ball down the slope and into the hole for the deuce. Dufner, normally quite sedate on the golf course, even gave a slight fist pump to celebrate the rare feat.

He added two more birdies at Nos. 4 and 5, turning the front nine in a four-under par 31. Three more birdies on the back side gave him 31-32=63 and he became the 24th player to post a 63 in major championship history.

Dufner flirted with winning the 2011 PGA Championship but lost in a playoff to Keegan Bradley. He has been one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour over the past two years.

2013 Masters champion Adam Scott shot a very solid two-under par 68 in his second round on Friday to tie Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar for second place heading into the weekend.

Kuchar has won the WGC-Accenture Match Play and the Memorial Tournament this year. He also has two runners-up at the Crowne Plaza and the RBC Canadian Open. Second in the FedEx Cup race, Kuchar has already won $4.9 million this season.

Furyk is a former U.S. Open champion and his supreme accuracy with driver and irons should bode well for the veteran over the tight fairways of Oak Hill.

Justin Rose, 2013 U.S. Open winner, is just one more shot back at six-under par. He would love to add a Wanamaker Cup to his trophy collection come Sunday evening.

The hottest man in golf right now, Henrik Stenson is also at six-under par. Stenson was a top ranked player and spent more than 100 weeks in the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings in 2006-2008. He has struggled over the past couple years but seems to be finding his game. His last three starts include T-3 at the Scottish Open and runners-up in the Open Championship and at Firestone at the WGC-Bridgestone.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods struggled to find fairways and the soft conditions did not seem to help him over his first two rounds. He has shot 71-70 and, at one-over par for the championship, is 10 shots behind the leader.

Phil Mickelson, who won the Open Championship two weeks ago, was very disappointed with his one-over par 71 on Thursday and matched it with another 71 on Friday. He is at two-over par and T-50.

Defending champion and world ranked No. 3 Rory McIlroy is T-28. He has posted 69-71 and is even-par for the tournament. He is only nine shots off the leader. If he could find some magic and fire in his game on Saturday, he could still be a factor come Sunday.
