PGA Championship 2013 Leaderboard: Top Day 3 Storylines and Live Updates

Tim DanielsJun 4, 2018

Jason Dufner enters the weekend with sole possession of the PGA Championship lead at 9-under par. He was the best of a large group of golfers who took full advantage of unexpectedly favorable scoring conditions at Oak Hill Country Club.

The American will have to fend off a star-studded pack of fellow contenders in order to claim the Wanamaker Trophy. Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar and Jim Furyk are just two strokes off the pace. And there are plenty of players who can get back in the mix if they go low on Saturday.

It sets up for an exciting weekend at the season's final major. Let's take a glance at where the top players stand right now, followed by an examination of some top storylines to watch throughout moving day at Oak Hill.

Top Storylines for Day 3

Will Jason Dufner maintain his lead?

Dufner splashed in an eagle from the fairway on the second hole and he was off and running. He knocked home five birdies over the remaining 16 holes and didn't drop a single shot en route to a 63, tying the major championship record.

While it was an extremely impressive round to put him in prime position to capture his first major, the work has only just begun. Unless Oak Hill toughens up over the weekend, he's going to need two more low scores to capture the title.

It starts with reversing a troublesome Saturday trend. In the first three majors of 2013, Dufner's average score on Day 3 was just shy of 75. If he even comes within a few strokes of that number, he'll likely watch the field fly right by.

Which players in pursuit will make a charge?

No player is having a better run at major championships than Scott. The Australian star won the Masters in April and finished third at the Open Championship last month. He's a steady player who isn't overwhelmed by tough courses and is ready to pounce if Dufner falters.

One group to watch during the afternoon is Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. Both players currently sit at 6-under par, three strokes off the pace. But it wouldn't be a surprise if either of them made a serious run toward the top to put some pressure on the final few groups.

Webb Simpson also forced his way on to the radar with a 64 on Friday. If he can build off that round and post a similar number on Day 3, he should find himself within striking distance of the lead heading into the final round.

Can Tiger Woods pull off a miracle comeback?

Woods finds himself 10 strokes behind Dufner heading into the weekend. A pair of lackluster rounds that featured subpar ball striking and a lack of highlight-reel putts means he would need to play extraordinary golf over the next two days to have any hope of a comeback.

The biggest problem for Woods is the conditions. If they remain favorable, the odds are the leaders will simply post a score he can't catch. If they get tougher, the door will remain open but he wasn't even able to conquer the course when it was "easy."

So Woods' quest for a 15th major championship will probably have to wait until 2014. Although it's impossible to count him out completely—especially when you consider he shot a 61 en route to victory last week—he's now an extreme long shot instead of a favorite.
