Classification Games
Hong Kong def. Bahrain 87-79
Japan def. India 73-64
Here's a closer look at the four quarterfinals games.
Chinese Taipei Upends China
Some may call Chinese Taipei's victory over China an upset, but it is possible China was never as good as most experts originally believed.
With Jianlian Yi back in the lineup for China and the team riding a three-game win streak from the second round of group play, it seemed like the 2011 FIBA Asia champs were primed for a run at a spot in the FIBA World Cup.
Chinese Taipei wasn't intimidated in the least bit. It came out firing and made 50 percent of its three-point shots.
Throughout the tournament, Quincy Davis III has been the team's best player and inside presence. He was dominant against China on Friday with 26 points and 10 rebounds. He made 12-of-13 shots from the field.
Yi's 22 points and 10 rebounds wasn't enough for China to stave off elimination.
Iran Continues to Roll
The Iranians continued to blow away the competition in the tournament. Iran improved to 6-0 with a 94-50 rout of Jordan on Friday. Hamed Haddadi led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds. Iran enjoyed a huge 46-27 edge in rebounding in the game.
Matching the Iranians size and strength on the inside will be the biggest test for Chinese Taipei in the semifinals.
Its tallest player is 6'8" and the team will have to find a way to handle three 7-footers on the Iranian side.
Philippines Continue to Shine as Host
After another impressive win, the Philippines are proving themselves to be serious threats to win FIBA Asia 2013. The host team easily defeated Kazakhstan 88-58 and showed the ability to distance themselves from lesser teams
Some concern may have arose after the team seemingly struggled to put away Hong Kong in the final second-round game, but that concern should have been laid to rest on Friday.
The Philippines outscored Kazakhstan 37-18 to extend a 10-point halftime lead to a 30-point beatdown.
Gary David led the team in scoring with 22 points. As usual, Kazakhstan struggled to shoot the ball. They made just 30 percent of their shots from the field and never found their rhythm offensively.
Korea Crushes Qatar
In the final quarterfinal game, Korea made easy work of Qatar. The Korean defense shut down Jarvis Hayes, the tournament's leading scorer. He was held to just 10 points on the game and Qatar shot just 29 percent from the field as a team.
Korea was led by Sungmin Cho who had 16 points in the rout. The team will now face the Philippines in the semifinals in a matchup of two of the more well-rounded teams in the field.
