PGA Championship 2013 Leaderboard: Top Day 2 Storylines and Live Updates

Benjamin KleinAug 9, 2013

The second round of the PGA Championship is here.

Day 1 from Oak Hill Country Club in New York didn’t fail to impress, and neither should Day 2 of action. The final major of the season is still very much up for grabs, as there are many players within just a few shots of Adam Scott and Jim Furyk, the co-leaders, who will start Friday at five under par.

Here’s a look at how Thursday played out for many of the top golfers in the world, per the official Twitter account of the PGA Championship:

There’s no guarantee that Scott and/or Furyk holds the championship lead entering the weekend. But if not either of those two, then who? Tiger Woods is six strokes back entering the second round, as he continues to hope to win his 15th career major. Guys like Lee Westwood and Justin Rose, among others, are in the mix too.

It should be another fun day from Oak Hill, as you never know what’s going to happen at a major championship. Below are the biggest storylines for Day 2 at the PGA Championship as well as the live leaderboard. Be sure to check back throughout the day—and the weekend—for constant updates as to who sits atop it.

Will Mother Nature Be a Factor?

The golfers weren’t the only ones on the course on Thursday, as Mother Nature wanted a piece of Oak Hill as well. The horn sounded at 4:25 p.m. ET, per the championship’s official Twitter account, and play didn’t resume for a little bit over an hour. Will weather be a factor again on Friday?

It appears so, according to Kelly Tilghman of The Golf Channel:

Oak Hill played very tough on Thursday even though so many golfers finished their opening rounds under par. The second, fourth and 13th holes were the only ones that played under par for the first round of the PGA Championship. That means the average was worse than par on 83 percent of the holes.

Tilghman also notes that the course will be soft for the second round of action. It will be interesting to see how the golfers approach it, too. Will they be more aggressive or more hesitant to take risky shots?

For those trying to avoid the cut, they make have to take some risks to be able to play the weekend.

How Will Tiger Play?

Tiger Woods didn’t play his best round of golf on Thursday, but it was far from his worst. He made the turn at two under but had a pair of rough holes on the front nine and turned in his scorecard at one over. That leaves him six strokes back of the co-leaders entering Friday’s play from Rochester.

That’s bad and good news for Tiger, per Justin Ray of ESPN:

Woods is still the No. 1 golfer in the world, so if anyone is going to make a big comeback, it’s going to be him. Keep in mind that he’s also No. 1 on the PGA Tour this season in terms of scoring average before the cut, according to PGATour.com. He could easily gain some ground with a strong performance on Friday.

Friday was the highlight of Tiger’s most recent victory, the Bridgestone Invitational from last week. In the second round there, he shot a 61, which tied a career best for him. It was the best round of the four by five strokes. He was on fire last Friday. How will he make out this Friday? Will he be closer or further from the top after Day 2?

Can Anyone Shoot 63?

For most of the afternoon on Thursday, many were talking about whether Adam Scott could make history. He made five straight birdies on the front nine to get to five under par and was six under through 14. As ESPN Stats & Info noted, he needed a pair of birdies to make some history:

All hope for a record-breaking performance was lost when Scott bogeyed the 16th hole, taking him out of the running to shoot 62. While he didn’t shoot seven under for the round, he still played very well throughout the day. He still enters the second round tied for the lead. But will anyone shoot a 63—or maybe even a 62?

ESPN Stats & Info says that the lowest score at a major is 63:

It doesn’t seem like it will be that difficult to shoot a 63 in the next few days. Scott and Furyk were just two strokes away from tying the record, and Scott nearly had a chance to break it.

If a couple of shots take better bounces, we could be talking about one of the best performances ever instead of if it can be done at Oak Hill this week.
