Projecting Tiger Woods' Day 2 Score at 2013 PGA Championship

Alex BallentineAug 9, 2013

Tiger Woods entered the 2013 PGA Championship as the odds-on favorite to raise the Wanamaker Trophy at Oak Hill Country Club. If his first round is any indication, he's going to have a difficult time living up to those expectations.

The 37-year-old was fairly consistent Thursday. Starting his day on the 10th tee, he carded two birdies on the back nine. As Brian Wicker of PGATour.com tweeted out, he wasn't doing anything spectacular off the tee but was doing enough to stay below par.

The front nine wouldn't be as kind to Woods, though. The struggles with accuracy started to catch up to the world's top-ranked golfer, and bringing out the driver on No. 5 did little to mitigate the problem. He found the rough and had to work to save par.

Overall, Woods cannot be too upset with his score after a day marked by inaccuracy off the tee. Oak Hill is an unforgiving course, and he's fortunate to still be in the hunt.

Here's a look at his scorecard for the day.

Heading into Round 2, he'll be looking to close the gap between himself and co-leaders Adam Scott and Jim Furyk, who each finished the day five-under.

However, all is not lost for the polarizing star. As PGA Tour Media tweeted out, Woods' last two wins at major tournaments came after he shot one-over on the tournament's opening day.

Looking ahead, there's evidence that Woods can right the ship going forward. First, he'll likely need to keep the driver in the bag.

Shane Bacon of Yahoo! Sports observed Woods opting for an iron off the tee on No. 13, a 598-yard par four.

The choice ultimately set Woods up with one of his two birdies on the round.

With a difficult round behind him—letting him know how the course needs to be played—it should be expected that he will elevate his game accordingly. If he reverts back to his more conservative back-nine performance he should shave some strokes off of his score from the previous round.

It would be surprising to see him shoot any less than one-under on the second day after eliminating the mistakes he made in his first round.

If the tournament's leaders stay hot, that won't be the best of scores, but it should be enough to keep him within striking distance on the tournament's third day.
