Liverpool Transfer News: Luis Suarez's Reasoning for Wanting a Move Is Sound
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez may be going about the summer transfer window all wrong, but at least the Uruguayan star wants away from Anfield for the right reasons.
According to Mirror Football on Thursday, the 26-year-old is hoping to resolve his current situation with the club in a "friendly" fashion and hopes to fulfill his goal of competing in the Champions League next season.
Here's a look at some of the latest comments from Suarez regarding a potential transfer this summer:
"My aim is to reach an agreement with the club in a friendly manner and I hope the clause we agreed a year ago is fulfilled. Up to now, it hasn't been.
It's not that I am desperate to leave, but I like things to be clear and a year ago I made my position to the club clear.
Gerrard has a lot of history with Liverpool and his words are very important but everyone should understand that I need to play in the Champions League to keep growing as a footballer.
Now I have the chance, I want to take it.
"
Disagree with Suarez all you like. I'll be the first to say that he hasn't helped his cause with his foolish behavior on and off the pitch at times. But in the end, there's no arguing with his reasons for wanting out.
As his production last season proved (23 goals and eight assists in 33 league matches), Suarez is one of the best players on the planet, and he deserves to be competing at the highest level in the biggest tournaments. And if he did agree to a clause in his contract that states Liverpool must sell him if a bid of £40 million or more comes along, then he deserves better.
But at the same time, if no such clause exists, then tough luck.
Despite his desires and regardless of whether he is deserving, a contract is a contract, and Liverpool wouldn't be forced to part ways with Suarez. The Reds would just be moving him to make him happy and remove a constant distraction.
Both sides have legitimate hopes. Suarez wants to win and play for the biggest titles in his prime. And of course the Reds want him around to help them chase those very same trophies.
But Suarez is no fool, and he understands that Liverpool isn't the club to help him reach his goals. After all, the Reds haven't won the Premier League since 1990, and they've missed out on the Champions League in each of the past three seasons.
On the other hand, Arsenal, a club Suarez has been linked to for weeks, is eligible for the Champions League this coming season, and the Gunners won the Premier League as recently as 2004.
Make no mistake, Luis Suarez hasn't helped his image this summer, but neither has Liverpool. The club's front office has been unrealistic from the start to think that Suarez would remain loyal despite being kept out of the Europe's biggest tournament for the third straight year.
