Last season, Swansea City made a surprising run to the Capital One Cup final, thrashing minnows Bradford 5-0 to pick up their first major knockout trophy. It's unexpected results like that which make the competition special. The tournament format helps level the playing field for underdogs.
The Jacks entered the tournament in the second round and began their title journey with a nondescript victory over Barnsley. At that point, they certainly weren't viewed as a threat to capture the trophy with the marquee clubs still waiting to join the event.
Yet, after the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and the other top clubs were added in the third round, they started falling in rapid succession. It helped open the door for an unlikely winner, and Swansea took advantage.
They knocked out defending champion Liverpool in the fourth round, took advantage of a favorable quarterfinal matchup with Middlesbrough and stunned Chelsea in the semifinals before crushing Bradford in the final.
Bradford was also a great success story itself, with the fourth-tier club beating the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa on the way to the final.
Swansea's story, though, gives hope to underdog clubs either already in the tournament or joining it in the second round. The odds of another unanticipated champion are still low, but the Jacks proved it's possible for a club outside the upper echelon to steal the spotlight.
The second round of this year's tournament will surely be as entertaining as the first.
