Wayne Rooney Must Forget About Move to Chelsea This Summer

Joseph ZuckerJun 4, 2018

Wayne Rooney better give up hope on that transfer to Chelsea, otherwise he'll only be left feeling more blue.

The 27-year-old striker has been the subject of unending rumours regarding a move away from Manchester United. Chelsea have been the club most linked with the player, but it appears United will be having none of it.

David Moyes has been rather unequivocal in his stance that Rooney won't be going anywhere, per BBC Sport. Now, Jamie Jackson of The Guardian is reporting that the Red Devils would not sell the star striker, even in the event he hands in a transfer request:

Wayne Rooney will not be able to force his way out of Manchester United to join Chelsea, even if he lodges an official transfer request, a move that appears the next logical step for the striker who is intent on leaving before the transfer window closes.

Rooney has said nothing publicly regarding his future, though he is determined to leave Old Trafford. This follows a breakdown in his relationship with the club that can be traced back to last season's falling-out with David Moyes's predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson, who remains at United as a director and ambassador.

"

The biggest problem for both Chelsea and Rooney is that United aren't in any position where they have to sell the player, especially to a league rival. They have a contract with the player that runs for two more seasons. Why offload a player to one of your competitors for the league title if you don't have to?

There doesn't seem to be much interest from foreign clubs, either. Paris Saint-Germain have bought Edinson Cavani, and Real Madrid have already spent almost £64 million on player transfers.

Rooney needs to start focusing on contributing for Manchester United, no matter how untenable the relationship appears to be between he and Moyes. Right now, Manchester United don't need Wayne Rooney; Wayne Rooney needs Manchester United.

Would United be better off with a happy Rooney on the pitch? Of course. Any club would be. When Rooney's at his best, he's capable of scoring goals or dropping back and being more of a facilitator.

United have a wealth of talented strikers already in the fold, though.

Robin van Persie was more of a consistent, composed presence on the pitch than Rooney has been over the last few seasons. Javier Hernandez is poised for a breakout season after doing most of his damage off the bench under Sir Alex Ferguson. For all of his faults, Danny Welbeck is a very good player who brings some versatility. Then you have younger players like Angelo Henriquez and Will Keane who could emerge as squad players this year.

Forward isn't an area of concern for Manchester United. They have more than enough to win the Premier League and improve upon their finish in the Champions League last season.

The Red Devils are just as well-positioned off the pitch to rebuff any of Chelsea's offers. United are the second-richest club in the world, according to Forbes. They earn untold millions each year without having to sell their best players.

They can afford to pay Rooney's weekly wages and sell him for a lesser fee down the road if it means sending a message. The club's chief executive, Ed Woodward, has already told talkSPORT:

"

There are no contract renewals that are being discussed. I am not sitting down with any player on an extension and there is no trigger date in the diary. Would we be afraid to run a contract down? Of course not.

"

It's much the same as what Manchester City did with Carlos Tevez. The club was happy to let him golf in Argentina and pay his wages. It was a massive waste of money and meant that his transfer value would only decrease.

But City were able to show other clubs and players that they won't be bullied into making any deals they feel are unfair. After a while, Tevez realized that he had to be a happy camper, otherwise he'd have no chance of getting out of Manchester.

That's what Rooney needs to remember.

Should he become a malcontent at United, he's only hurting the club and, more important to Rooney, lowering his value. There won't be any top clubs willing to spend a lot of money on a striker who's not playing and comes with a lot of baggage.

With the way United continue bunkering in, the chances of Rooney going to Chelsea get slimmer and slimmer. He's going to be faced with one of two options: He can either face the facts and realize that he's going to be a United player and give everything he's got to the club, or he can continue to push himself away from the club.

Only one of those choices will get Rooney what he really wants.
