Liverpool Players Who Will Get Their Chance This Season

Tom SunderlandJun 8, 2018

While the club is far from enjoying the greatest period in its long and illustrious history, Liverpool haven’t ceased in their production of top-quality players both young and old.

Whether as a result of their premature age or perhaps because of a considerable injury layoff, not every player gets the opportunities they would otherwise have afforded to them on schedule.

Over the course of the 2013-14 campaign, another fresh batch of players will have their shot at making an impact of Anfield proportions in the hopes of earning some form of seniority under Brendan Rodgers.

Some candidates may have already figured as a Red at some point in the past but are set for increased responsibilities this term, hoping to reshape Liverpool’s fortunes.

Jordan Ibe

Having scored his debut goal for the club just last month, Jordan Ibe has received an increased amount of game time over the course of the preseason.

Evidently a component of the Liverpool reserves who seems to be drawing Brendan Rodgers’ attention, the 17-year-old winger could develop a similar story to Raheem Sterling this coming campaign, figuring in the club’s plans despite his very young age.

Able to play with both feet, Ibe has only made one Premier League appearance in his career but made a great impact in his 60 minutes or so against QPR last term, assisting Philippe Coutinho for the only goal of the match.

Now, the teenager should seek to have further involvement in first-team matters, but he is competing in a very saturated part of the Liverpool squad.

Andre Wisdom

2 of 5

Already having dipped his toes in the Premier League’s waters for the first time last season, Andre Wisdom is among the most experienced on this list, having made 12 starts in the English top flight.

Although the likes of Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish had the Leeds-born defender at their disposal, it was Brendan Rodgers who really gave Wisdom his first crack of the first-team whip.

In return, the 20-year-old impressed and hasn’t often looked out of place when deputising for Glen Johnson, sometimes even featuring as a central defender.

Still in the early stages of his development, Wisdom will need to take some lessons before he can stake a claim for a regular starting place, but given Johnson’s propensity for injury, there’s a very good chance the youngster will continue to be afforded his shot.

Having signed a new five-year contract at Anfield in January, it’s clear that Wisdom is in the long-term plans of the Liverpool hierarchy, and hopes can be high for the upcoming campaign.

Samed Yesil

3 of 5

Arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for the sum of around £1 million last summer, the expectations surrounding Samed Yesil were always high.

However, the German’s season was blighted by injury, not least of which was an ACL rupture in February, which would end his season and stop Yesil from making any moves towards the first-team lineup.

Six months later, the Dusseldorf native is in the midst of his preseason preparations which, according to the Metro, would appear to be taking their toll on the youngster.

As long as the ligament injury hasn’t hindered his development, Yesil can hope to continue his progress as one of the most promising youngsters within Liverpool’s ranks, with the 2013-14 season his next opportunity for a breakthrough.

Martin Kelly

Were it not for several key injuries prohibiting him from making the kind of waves that he once would have liked, Martin Kelly might already be a firm staple in the Liverpool first team.

However, the 23-year-old’s growth has been severely halted in the last year or so, with an ACL injury last September restricting Kelly to just seven appearances across all competitions last term.

Able to play as a right-back or centre-back, this season will be the next chance for a player widely looked upon as the long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher to stage his uprising.

Before his injury layoff, Kelly was making moves into the England national team and in fact earned his first cap in Roy Hodgson’s first game as manager of the Three Lions.

Now, the Kop utility man will hope that his progress is enough to earn him a spot either alongside Daniel Agger in the centre of the Reds’ defence or challenging Glen Johnson for a place at right-back.

Luis Alberto

5 of 5

One of Liverpool’s two La Liga signings this summer, Luis Alberto might take some time in adjusting to the Premier League’s style of play, but he has the potential to adapt after establishing himself as one of Spain’s budding prospects.

At Sevilla, the 20-year-old impressed as part of the club’s "B" team and also started to make moves into the senior side as well on loan at Barcelona B for a term.

Primarily a winger but also able to play more centrally, Alberto has a lot to live up to considering his services set Rodgers’ side back a reported £6.8 million, per the Daily Mail’s Paul Collins.

That being said, the youngster should now receive his opportunity to do just that lest Rodgers risk the wrath of his critics, who would be more than happy to point out any bad transfer moves made in Merseyside.
