WWE Raw Results: Biggest Winners and Losers After Aug. 5
WWE's second-to-last Monday Night Raw before the second-biggest event of the year was a good one. We got some intense brawling and some exciting storyline progression.
Just as importantly, the SummerSlam card become more fully formed; two more matches were announced for the event—Bray Wyatt vs. Kane and Damien Sandow vs. Cody Rhodes.
As with every show, some superstars came out as winners and some as losers. Let's take a look at who falls into which category for the latest episode of Monday Night Raw.
Winners: Daniel Bryan and John Cena
It feels strange to put these two in a slide together, but they were both the big winners from Raw for the same reason.
Bryan kicked off the show with what was easily one of the best promos of his WWE career.
Later, Cena gave his reply. It’s normally hard to watch John Cena and not roll your eyes at a lot of what he says, but there was none of that here.
The Leader of the Cenation was terrific on the mic; it was one of the best promos he’s cut in a long time.
Their match at SummerSlam will surely be excellent, but on Raw both men proved their microphone might.
Also, did anyone else find it weird that Vince McMahon couldn't seem to pronounce "WWE championship" properly?
Loser: Wade Barrett
Well, who would’ve thought things would turn out like this?
Three years ago, Daniel Bryan was one of the first men eliminated from NXT season one, a competition Wade Barrett would ultimately win.
Fast-forward to now and the Barrett Barrage can’t even overcome Bryan’s beard.
Barrett’s place on the card has been getting lower and lower, but this has to be an all-time low.
Loser: Alberto Del Rio
Raw was rough for the Mexican Aristocrat. He suffered a pinfall loss to Rob Van Dam, but that wasn't the worst thing that happened to him.
Del Rio blamed his loss on Ricardo Rodriguez and subsequently attacked his sidekick, more than likely leading to a breakup between the two.
Ricardo was an essential part of Del Rio’s shtick. His personal assistant helped endear him to fans during his (short) run as a babyface and has always garnered heat as a heel.
The segment got Del Rio some big heat, but the long-term effect of this breakup is likely not good for the Essence of Excellence.
Winner: Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar’s absence was beginning to hurt his program with CM Punk.
Thankfully, The Beast Incarnate made an immediate impact upon appearing at Raw and made up for lost time.
Sure, it was the same sort of stuff we usually see from Lesnar. His music hit, he comes out and gets into a ringside brawl.
As formulaic as it may be, watching Brock wreck everything hasn’t gotten stale just yet.
CM Punk is also a winner here—he no longer has to create the buildup all on his own.
Brock comes out on top again, but we’ll see if The Best can truly be bested by The Beast at SummerSlam.
Losers: Fandango and Rob Van Dam
Fandango is in need of something to do. Instead of being given a rivalry and match for SummerSlam, he was fed to the returning Kofi Kingston.
RVD also needs to be put to good use, but at least he got a big win over current world heavyweight champion Alberto Del Rio.
Mr. Monday Night can at least move into a post-SummerSlam feud with some leverage, but the same cannot be said for Fandango.
The Ballroom Brawler is languishing right now, and it’s surprising, even for the WWE, for the returning RVD to not be booked for a match at SummerSlam.
