Richard Hughes Wins Another Top Jockey Award
Make it four in a row for the accomplished Glorious Goodwood master. After winning seven races by Saturday afternoon, Richard Hughes was handed the prize with only three races left to go.
His impressive run began in 2010 when he captured a record-setting nine victories at the five-day festival. Hughes followed that performance up with five wins in 2011 and four more last year.
Aboard Pethers Moon, Hughes captured his seventh victory. Channel 4 Racing captured the victory that clinched the award for him once again:
Racing UK’s commercial director Nick Mills labeled Hughes as the “king of Goodwood,” according to SportingLife.com.
Winsili Wins a Shocker at Nassau Stakes
A 20-1 long shot, Winsili simply outran the favorites to capture trainer John Gosden’s second consecutive Nassau Stakes victory. It was the only win for the trainer this week, but it couldn’t have come at a better time.
With two furlongs to go, jockey William Buick found and opening and seized the opportunity, pushing Winsili to outsprint the field down the final stretch.
Second-place finisher Thistle Bird was a neck behind but was also a long shot at 33-1 odds. Hughes, riding race favorite Sky Lantern, failed to capture his eighth win of the week after getting caught in traffic.
Gosden wasn’t as surprised as most in the race’s aftermath.
“It wasn’t a fluke, I didn’t bring her here for the Sussex air,” he said, according to Oliver Brett of Channel 4 Racing.
Rex Imperator Breezes to Stewards' Cup Victory
The four-year-old Rex Imperator captured a two-and-a-quarter lengths victory at the esteemed six-furlong Stewards Cup on Saturday. Ajjaadd, a 66-1 long shot, was the closest horse in proximity to the winner.
It was a long journey to the winner’s circle for the difficult horse. After going through two previous trainers, it was uncertain whether or not the mount would become a champion.
Not only did trainer William Haggas harness his horse’s potential, he turned him into a dominant winner at one of the year’s biggest races.
Jockey Neil Callan had recommended the horse to his team and was obviously feeling the joy from his victory. He posted a perfect and telling statement following his triumph:
“Neil actually bought him for the owner, it’s really a team effort and I’m thrilled to bits,” Haggas’s wife, Maureen, said, according to SportingLife.com.
